U.S. Border Patrol chief Gregory Bovino, who appeared in federal court on Tuesday sporting his trademark dark green uniform and crew cut, seems likely to become a regular presence there.
U.S. District Court judge Sara Ellis ordered Bovino, the Border Patrol sector chief overseeing the agency’s operations in Chicago and previously in Los Angeles, to appear in federal court each weekday at 6 p.m. to report on daily immigration operations. She also ordered that he turn over all agents’ use of force reports from Sept. 2 through Oct. 25, as well as the bodycam footage corresponding to those reports, by Friday.
The exchange highlights the mounting tensions between immigration officials and residents across the Chicago area, particularly after Bovino and immigration agents were captured on video and in photos deploying chemical agents in numerous residential neighborhoods. Attorneys argued the actions were in violation of Ellis’ temporary restraining order issued on Oct. 6 which said immigration authorities must curb the use of tear gas and chemical agents when they are not under threat, especially where the general public could be affected.
In that order Ellis also instructed immigration agents to wear — and turn on — their body cameras.
That led to one of Tuesday’s most revealing questions: Did Bovino, as the head of the operation in Chicago, have a body camera on the day he was recorded?
“I do not, ma’am, no,” he replied. Nor did he have training, he said. On body cameras, Bovino said he did not know how many of his 201 agents in Chicago did not have them, but that he believed 99% did have them. Bovino committed to getting his agents equipped.

No, judge. That information is classified. You don’t have clearance.
Turn in fully redacted documents.
This smells a bit....
Sorry hon. No can do. That info is classified.
“...must curb the use of tear gas and chemical agents when they are not under threat”
I would wear this statement out and keep saying (ad nauseam) we were under threat (which is true if things are being thrown at you, cars drive at you, rioters are attacking physically etc...)
Use their words against them and do not let them define the meaning like they do with “democracy” every time they say we are one.
Out of control judges are out of control.
Since when does a Judge run an Executive Department? What about separation of powers!
If this suit is only about the deployment of ICE in Illinois, then there is no reason for ICE to produce use of force reports or cam video, unless someone has filed a separate lawsuit declaring personal injury by ICE. That's judicial overreach in my eye. If no injury suits have been filed against ICE, the the DOJ needs to tell this Judge to go pound sand.
That works! Comply in a way that will infuriate the judge but they can’t do anything about it.
I agree the judge does not have the power.
I also think all federal agents should be required to wear body cams.
It’s only the journalists who are claiming they were treated badly, so only the reports for them and cam video need to be provided, not every report written by every ICE agent in Illinois. Her order is bullshit. The DOJ needs to shut her down immediately.
Another “Judge” suffering from Boasbergers Syndrome.
Chief Bovino should appear via Zoom from an undisclosed location. Citing safety concerns from illegal invaders and out of control Mayors and Judges.
“”Dear Judge, I will appear in the flesh once we have cleared out all of the vermin. Until then, make sure you have access to StarLink for our Zoom sessions.””
It is a contempt trap. Whoever is giving Bovino legal advice should probably go back to law school and pay attention this time.
Can the judge order the agents to wear a tie?
He should go every day, repeat his name rank and badge # to every question and pray that she’s dopey enough to jail him for contempt.
Wouldn’t this be a fifth amendment violation? If someone wants to allege wrong doing, let them do so, but to order this guy to report his officer’s actions everyday is doing the plaintiff’s work. All they have to do is watch his reports and sue.
Yes(?) and it has to be blue.
Judicial tyranny. Outraguous. Imperial judiciary rules the executive branch. We have 700 US presidents.
