What remained of The Maine was refloated after the investigation into her explosion. She was towed to sea beyond the 12 mile limit and scuttled in International waters. The location of her re-sinking has been known since that time. Again, the press can't get it right.

You're right that it was found and raised but at the time it only had to be towed 3-4 miles out for reburial in international waters.

Thanks. I was just going to mention that. I had seen the pictures of the Maine after they brought her back up. Another item is that Teddy Roosevelt carried a revolver up San Juan Hill that was salvaged from the Maine. I think it was a .38 and the makers of the Movie "Roughriders" knew that fact and ignored it by using a Single Action Colt.

Exactly, the press is wrong again.
The original explosions destroyed the bow section of the Maine.
When it was raised, the bow was cut from the vessel and the hull was bulkheaded so it would be airtight for the stern tow to sea.
The area was mapped as to where the vessel was towed and finally sent to her grave.
The only real uncertainty was how far as she sank, that she actually strayed from the coordinates as best that could be determined at the time, as they didn't have GPS then.
The announcement was an official acknowledgement to the American people that the wreck is an American Memorial Site.
