My way of saying, if you want to say that partisan party politics are not a worthy replacement for opposition to Clinton, and will tear Free Republic apart, then you probably should bust on anyone calling other Freepers statists if they are Republicans, or Bushbots if they support Bush, and harsh on those who bash Keyes constantly, and give hell to those who call libertarians druggies.
If you are serious about stopping the partisan party bickering, we have to police ourselves and not tolerate the partisan propagandizing and demagoguery we throw at each other on Free Repubic.
The point I was trying make to JR is that, --- FR already is, and has been, a pretty damn unique collection of 'conservatives', fighting about just what conservatism should be.
--- And, - imo, - it should be kept that way. -- And the ONLY one that can do that is JR. - He 'da boss'.
-- Just the other nite a thread de-evolved into the same old 'We're at WAR, you dumby!' shouting match, and opponents of the current war policies were having their patriotic intentions questioned. -- This is exactly the kind of thing that gets us at "each others throats". ---- Thus, - it's the opposite of a good 'plan' for FR.

I like the filter on bumps he proposes ... I guess further comments should go to that thread, and I will be doing that.

Agreed, which is why I didn't just list Bush bashing or Keyes bashing. The mindless demagoguery on every issue is reaching a breathtaking crescendo, in my opinion.
It doesn't help any of us, and harms our common interests.
And you are of course right. Jim is the man, he is the captain. But just as a captain can only do so much to make a ship run and relies on the crew to do what is needed, I think there are way too many people who sit by and wait for Jim to fix things (and bitch at the way he fixes things), and way too many old timers actually making things difficult.
Flame wars bore me. I like arguing and debating. And I don't think flame wars convince anyone. At least arguments and debates have a shot at doing so.

Sounds to me like the Washington Post may have realized that they were on shaky ground legally and PR-wise.

Sounds to me like the Washington Post may have realized that they were on shaky ground legally and PR-wise.It was worse than shaky ground. They had strolled out into the middle of a minefield. They could not afford to have their injunction thrown out on appeal. After all, they have labored long and hard to build their facade, claiming that they are the Great Defenders of the First Amendment.

I'm glad the whole thing is behind you now, and I'm glad they didn't win any significant damages.

Good job Jim. You're a tough hombre.

May I have your permission, after the fact, heh, heh, to use this post anyway I see fit?
To: Jim Robinson
Congratulations, Jim. I'm sure it's a relief that it's all over.

Thank-you for the good news/bad news update. I'm relieved that FR lives!
I'll be sure to never post anything from LAT or WP because I refuse to read either one.
FReegards and God Bless You.

Free Republic agrees to continue posting only excerpts (as allowed by fair use) and links...
Excerpts and links are cool. Sometimes all you really need from an article is a particular excerpt.
Congratulations on the outcome.

Thanks for the ping, Meekie; congratulations Jim!!! This is very good news. You would have surely spent many thousands more in attorney fees had this continued for even another few months.

Ahhh... Freedom Rings...
Thanks Jim Robinson for the update (it is a good day)

I agree Dave...the constant whining, sniveling and complaining by a small minority of losers is not productive.
It serves no useful purpose whatsoever.
There is no power in complaint, there is only power in vision, commitment and action !!

I agree, and I stopped subscribing to the Leftist L.A Slimes several years ago anyway. They are not 'the kings of the world' like they think they are.I'm waiting for Richard Riordan to start up his own newspaper here. It couldn't possibly become as slanted as the other paper, even though he's really a center left human himself.

You see, if they didn't want their stories read with no exchange of cash, they wouldn't post them in such a way that poeple could read them that way.Exactly what Investor's Business Daily did a couple of years ago. They used to post their excellent articles and editorials on their website, but no more.
I'm not sure why they killed that, because for a niche paper like they IBD, it must have been great publicity to have their stuff posted here on FR. IMO, their editorials are much better than those on the WSJ, especially lately.

RE your #406
If you feel that what we're doing on FR is wrong or breaking any "rules" then get the f### out and don't come back. What's so hard about that?
I'm not being unfriendly, I just can't fathom the "we're breaking the law but here I am to comment on it" crowd.
Your points about PROFIT being made on other's work is totally valid, but I just have to reject any attempt at debate by someone who starts from the position that this law suit had anything to do with copyright law.
It didn't. If you know nothing else about this story know that, for it's a fact of life.

Thanky fer the ping Meek. I don't do a lot of "surfing" on FR lately, and it's likely I would have missed this one. I have read through many of the comments re: the settlement, and I too am happy that JR's got this monkee off his back.
But, for the life of me, I can't see the difference between someone cutting out an article and posting it on, say, the office/supermarket/whatever bulletin board; and copying and pasting that same article here. Maybe I'm a little thick.
A comment by another poster that this was NOT about copyright infringement sounds dead on. There is something else at work here that smells of horse hocky. Hopefully we are hearing the death rattle of the LASlimes and the Washington ComPost! God knows our country would be better off without them.
