If you want to see a suspicious picture, look at any 'artist rendering' of an ancient hunting or village life scene, one not involving extinct animals. You will notice that all of the animals appear as they do today while the people are greatly different than modern man.

There is another question to be pondered: "What evidence is there that these hominids were excessively hairy?" Hair doesn't fossilize very well, as I understand it. There is a lot of imagination that goes into artist renderings of these hominids.
