meteor means - more or less - "things that fall from the sky", as in meteorology. Meteorologist call rain, hail, snow, etc collectively "Hydrometeors". So he's fine on strictly "Meteorological" grounds.

Quite right, meteors are things that fall from the sky. Fish, rocks, chunks of ice, etc, are all included. Nonetheless, it is a confusing choice of terms because in modern usage it implies an extraterrestrial origin, which the researcher has discounted.
