Archdiocese learns politics is political [Cardinal Maida]

After barging into Michigan's gubernatorial race with all the subtlety of a presidential motorcade, the Archdiocese of Detroit is shocked -- shocked! -- to find that there is politics going on there.

Two Sundays ago, in his annual Respect Life message to priests and parishioners, Detroit Cardinal Adam Maida chastised Catholic public officials who fail to promote the church's teachings on abortion and decreed that a candidate's position on abortion is the most important factor for Catholic voters to consider.

"...Democrat, or Catholic. Pick one..."

'Democrat Catholic' would be an oxymoron, yes.

But if we simply insert 'apostate' between 'democrat' and 'Catholic' we have a consistent and correct descriptive term!

Actually, this was probably a smart move. We all know that the Catholic Church cannot involve itself in politics in the same way that liberal black pastors do, or it will risk losing its tax status.

So Cardinal Maida makes a statement that damages Granholm, but he has his spokesman make a pro-forma statement that it was not aimed at her in particular. That second statement was probably not meant to be publicized.

That's because churches are generally allowed to speak generally, i.e., "abortion is wrong," but not specifically, i.e., "don't vote for Granholm." Leastwise, that is how tax-free status is usually interpreted, except for outfits privileged by the liberal establishment, such as the NAACP or the ACLU, which can say whatever they like without fear of the IRS.

I guess then our Catholic Bishops will not follow the Pope when he says;

"America, Defend Life!!

...Be not afraid!!

...You must come out of your comfortable lifestyles and shout the Gospel of Life from the rooftops!!

...America, the Dark Horse is on the horizon!!

...Whenever human life is threatened We will stand up!!

...A nation that kills its children is a nation without hope."

Another tidbit that should be on billboards around the big cities.

Unfortunately, this is shameful but not surprising. My father has, for the most part, been snubbed by our local parishes. In fact, at several annual parish picnics, even though we weren't passing out literature, we were often told that "we'd rather not have you here at all" -- even at my own parish.

Since the House failed to pass the House of Worship Political Speech Protection Act, fear of losing that almighty "tax exempt status" will continue to keep most of our churches silent. In all the years I've lived in the Arlington Diocese, I have yet to hear anything even similar to this wonderful "Election Homily".

I'm so sorry for that. Remember the 8th beatitude.

These are what are referred to as "interesting times."

I'll keep you and your dad in my prayers.
