I remember reading somewhere that one of the obvious signs of a dysfunctional personality is when people start referring to things that were the results of their own actions as if they were acts of nature that "just happened" to them.

I think it's a symptom of pathological lying; and a cry for recognition as a victim, a subset of narcissism as in "girls, look at me, I've been hurt."
