"5'4"??? I had no idea. Wow, 378 lb. distributed over 5'4"! That's mind-boggling."

He is not over-weight. He is just too short. If he was say 8'3" tall he would be fine.

On a NYC subway car, only 3 average people can sit in every 4 seats reasonably comforatably. People who squeeze into that last seat on a crowded subway car, just because it is there, should be tossed out onto the tracks.

4 people can fit if they aren't obese and don't spread their legs wide. I'm also sick and tired of boys who literally push me (and other women) out of the way in order to grab the last seat. I always hope that the same things happens to their mothers and grandmothers.

Or you could exercise and eat less. But that takes effort.

The only effort these fat bastards make is to get elected and steal our earnings.

The doctors overlooked one basic fact of biology in the first surgery:

Nadler has four stomachs.

It is good to know that fatso's Congressional health coverage will pay the cost of every nickel of this elective proceedure and, pay for a bottle of good scotch for each of the surgeons involved.

Nadler was so far gone that it would have been virtually impossible for him to lose his excess weight by any other means.

Morbid obesity such as his completely alters the body and mind (satiety signals, ability to exercise, etc., etc.)and virtually noone has succeeded in losing and keeping off that much weight by sheer "will power" (which typically is neuropathologically altered in such cases).

That said, he actually has increased his chances for suffering medical and surgical complications by having his surgery done in two stages. The gold standard is the Roux-N-Y gastric bypass, which combines a drastic reduction in stomach volume with a significantly decreased area of intestinal absorption.

The majority of such patients -- even those larger than Nadler was -- experience few or no significant complications beyond an incisional hernia (10-15%) one year or so post-op. The repair of such defects is somewhat trivial and routinely is done on a same-day/ambulatory basis.

The success rate for keeping off one's excess weight via this approach is on the order of >80%, in contrast to less than 5% for those who lost more than one-hundred pounds through diet and exercise. Simply put, it becomes nearly impossible to eat, keep down, and absorb enough food to fail.

I underwent this procedure nearly three years ago and could write a book about the changes it has made in my newly regained life. Actually, I am writing a book (general market, technical, or both) about obesity, this surgical procedure, and my experiences -- "before and after."

If any FReepers continue to suffer from the curse of morbid obesity, please feel free to send me a FReepmail. In addition to my personal experience, I have professional education and experience in this and related medical matters....

Nadler's relatively modest weight lost stems from his two-stage approach. He likely will succeed after "Phase II"....

I think I sat next to this guy on a flight from London. Asked if I'd mind if he removed the seat partition. I said "OK", and it went downhill from there. Rolls of this guy's fat sort of flowed into every available space in the seat. Longest flight I've ever been on.

I'm glad Southwest is charging double for these heavyweights.

Hearing this news Mel Brooks must be beside himself. Who's he going to get to play Pizza-The-Hut in the Space Balls sequel?

He is truly pathetic if he has only lost 75 pounds in one year with the stomach surgery.

If you melt ice cream and drink it then it doesn't matter how small your stomach is.

Does this mean if Nancy Pelosi wants a boob job we have to foot the bill for that as well

If she gets both done, it'll cost twice as much.

Why can't these 'rats just do this the way the rest of us have to? Now, we have this: Lewinsky Hopes to be a Loser -- Bill's ex-girlfriend at an expensive fat farm.

What happened to eating less and doing more exercise? That worked for me. Not glamorous, not easy and not fast, but it *works*...
