There are some scientists who believe that life on earth originated beneath the surface and then adapted to surface conditions later. By studying life from locations such as lake Vostock which is isolated from life on the surface, they hope to discover clues about the orgins of life on earth. If life did in fact originate beneath the surface, then it becomes more likely that life exists on other planets and moons of other planets. Some books about this are "Dark Life" by Michael Ray Taylor, and "The Deep Hot Biosphere and the myth of fossil fuels" by Thomas Gold.
