Let's put this in proportion: military fatalities from all causes during the Vietnam War averaged 15 per day over the duration of the war. In Korea, 30 a day; and in WW2, over 230 a day. Proportion, please.

Check my tagline...they don't really need ALL of California to make a valid comparison.
Also saw a news report about Mexico City in New York; on average, at least 5 people being murdered per day.
