Conservative columnist says Bush "perfect for us"

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Conservative commentator Armstrong Williams criticized the media for focusing on the U.S. casualties in the war with Iraq during a speech at the fundamentalist Christian school Bob Jones University.

"George Bush isn't perfect, but he's perfect for us," Williams told about 5,000 people who attended his 20-minute talk Tuesday.

Williams, who is black and a South Carolina native, had passionate remarks for the university, which was thrust into the national spotlight when Bush made a campaign stop there during presidential primaries. Bush was criticized for not denouncing the school's ban on interracial dating.

"Yes, there was a time when Bob Jones didn't allow interracial dating," Williams said. "So, what else is new in the world.

"I applaud Bob Jones," he said. "They need more institution like this in the world."

Soon after Bush's visit, the school announced it would drop its ban on interracial dating.

Williams has been an aide to former U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond, R-S.C., and worked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas before he was nominated to the high court. Williams justified the war in Iraq by saying there have been no other terrorist attacks in the United States since Sept. 11, 2001.

He told his audience that affirmative action has a place, but it "should be based on need. It should never be based on race."

"I've never experienced racism in my life," he said.

Williams speech resonated with some students. Freshman Ethan Messier, 18, said he liked Williams' support of Bush, and sophomore Sarah LeBlanc said she liked that Williams was not ashamed of his faith.

"I like the fact that he didn't judge us for it," she said.
