Fr. Mitch Pacwa welcomes Dr. Zugibe to his program this evening. Dr. Zugibe, former Medical Examiner for Rockland County (NY), has done extensive studies on the Shroud of Turin. He also delivered the following lecture,
Crucifixion and Shroud Involvement
General Considerations:
1. Studied the Shroud and Crucifixion for over 50 years (1948-present)
2. Granted the privilege of examining the Shroud out of its case with several
other world renowned scientists. March 5, 2000 and the privilege of examining the Shroud in September 2002 after the restoration procedure where the patches and Holland cloth were removed.
3. Viewed, studied and photographed the Shroud during the 10/27 to 10/8, 1978
Exposition of the Shroud in Turin. (4 times), during the 6/7thru 6/10,1998
Exposition (3 times) and following removal of patches (one time) up close.
4. Attended the Secundum Inter Nationes Symposium de Sindonologia in
Turin on 10/7 and 8, 1978, the last 2 days of the exposition.
5. First founder and President of the Association of Scientists and Scholars
International for the Shroud of Turin (ASSIST).
6. Recognized internationally as one of the major authorities on medical aspects of
crucifixion and the Turin Shroud.
7. Presented over 500 lectures on the Crucifixion and the Shroud.
8. Performed several hundred suspensions with volunteers on a very accurate cross where electronic blood oxygen levels ( blood gases, ear oximetry) blood pressures, stress EKG changes, respiratory gas measurements, visual measurements, strain gauge measurements ( to determine pull on the hands) utilizing state of the art medical and scientific equipment.
9. Studied and photographed fibers from image and blood areas of the Shroud by light, polarizing and phase microscopy with the assistance of Zeiss scientists and equipment.
10. The St. Joseph Hospice mattress cover, brought from England to my laboratory by Father OLeary was intensively studied chemically and by light, polarizing and phase microscopy. 3d photographs were made in cooperation with the late Dr. Giovanni Tamburelli of the Centro Studi e Laboratori Telecomminicazioni in Turin.
11. Examined, and photographed the True copy of the Summit, New Jersey Shroud with a group of scientists, photographers etc. Performed intensive studies of the Hand Wound of the Shroud in the anatomy lab, in the early 50s, consultations with hand surgeons, and literature studies and actual defense wound studies corresponding to the hand wound where the entry was in the palm and exit exactly where the Shroud shows it.
Major Achievements:
1. First to determine that the cause of death in crucifixion was due to hypovolemic and traumatic shock and not due to asphyxiation
2. First to show that the straightening and sagging theory on the cross is physically impossible.
3. First to show that the so called bifurcation image pattern was not due to a change in angle of the wrists and not due to straightening and sagging..
4. First to show that the nails pierced the upper part of the palms of the hands and not through the wrists.
5. First to measure the exact pull on the hands during crucifixion when the feet are secured utilizing highly sophisticated, state of the art, strain-tension equipment and to show that the tension formula ( 2 times the cosine of the angle of the arms with the upright of the cross) which had been universally accepted is not applicable to crucifixion when the feet are secured to the upright of the cross.
6. First to refute and prove incorrect, the widely held hypothesis that injury to the median nerve was the reason that the thumbs do not show on the Turin Shroud and to demonstrate why the thumbs do not show.

"And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, 'Peace to you!' Then He said to Thomas, 'Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.' And Thomas answered and said to Him, 'My Lord and my God!' Jesus said to him, 'Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'" (John 20:26-31)
I've never understood the shroud phenomenon.
ping
Megathanks for the ping! I'm fascinated by the Shroud. Looking forward to the program.
Dr. Fred T. Zugibe to discuss the Shroud on Eye Witness News channel tonight at 8:00PM
If you want on or off the Shroud of Turin Ping List, Freepmail me.
Thanks for the ping!
Because it's tangible evidence of Christ's existence and reasonable evidence of His resurrection?
Interestingly, the blood type on the Shroud matches the blood type of the eucharistic miracle of Lanciano (and also the sudarium of Oviedo), an amazing confluence of miracles.
Huh?
2. First to show that the straightening and sagging theory on the cross is physically impossible.
3. First to show that the so called bifurcation image pattern was not due to a change in angle of the wrists and not due to straightening and sagging..
Ummm... huh? What's this about?
6. First to refute and prove incorrect, the widely held hypothesis that injury to the median nerve was the reason that the thumbs do not show on the Turin Shroud and to demonstrate why the thumbs do not show.
Ok, why then?
I'm a Shroud believer by the way, it's just that this group of statements say he proved why thigns aren't such and such way or happened a different way but does not mention what those different ways are.
It's really amazing stuff. But as much as I appreciate the evidence, I don't need a shroud to believe in Jesus.
Still, terribly fascinating what Our Lord went through to redeem us. That's what I get from the Shroud. It cannot be studied enough!
More reasonable or more authentic than, say, the Word of God? We know that Christ was crucified and raised from the dead because we have the inscribed, infallible testimony of the Holy Spirit. The same way we know that He performed many miracles.
Actually, in its present form it's not evidence of anything. One needs more "faith" to believe in its authenticity than one needs to believe the self-authenticating Word of God.
Actually, it's the Eternal Word Television Network, available via most cable and satellite dish providers.
AH! Senior Moment... Thanks for the correction...
Re: The True Copy of the Shroud
There are many "true copies" of the Shroud of Turin... to be a "true copy" the copy is placed on the original and blessed, thus imbueing the copy with some semblance of provenance. One of these True Copies is kept in a church in Summit, New Jersey.
Re: Straightening and sagging and bifurcation
The blood flows on the arms of the man on the Shroud change angles. Dr. Pierre Barbet, a medical examiner in Paris at the turn of the last Century hypothesized that these changes in blood flow angles were caused by the crucified man pushing himself up with his nailed feet to relieve the agony of his arms and the difficulty breathing when hanging. The theory says that one angle of flow is created when the man is hanging down, and the other is created when the man is pushed up. Zugibe, a modern forensic pathologist who experimented with live subjects, showed that the angled blood flows do not require this upping and downing...
Re: the lack of imaging of the thumbs.
If the nails had gone through the Space of Destot (a natural passage through the croweded bones of the wrist), as Barbet contended, he claimed that the median nerve would have been impacted and as a result of nerve damage, the thumbs become paralized and retract into the palm area. Zugibe rightly points out that the median nerve does not go through the Space of Destot and is in fact on the other side of the wrist. He also proposed another pathway for the nail that actually puts the entrance in the low palm and the exit exactly where the shroud show it to be.
The thumbs are not visible simply because the image formation mechanism only works UP TO a distance of about 4 centimeters. The thumbs in a naturally relaxed state will fall more than 3.5 centimeters below the back of the hand... and be rotated toward the palm... thus fading into obscurity on the image.
The list is just that... a list of things he worked on or proved/disproved. The details of all those things are in his peer reviewed papers on the Shroud.
Very painful to read Dr. Zugbe. Words fail.
Some folks do not see that the Shroud is for repentance and conversion. Most folks will not see that they are in need of any of that.
thanks...
didn't Jesus die of dehydration?
Looking forward to commentary, since we're media-poor here at Graymatter Manor.
A shame, Dr. Zugibe is not on. Some Deacon is on instead.
I'm hoping the segment on the shroud will follow in the second half hour. Stay tuned.......
Nope, going to phone calls for the Deacon. Not to deride the Deacon, but I really was hoping to see the information on the Shroud.
