A very smart rebuttal to to Bill Maher's 'Religulous'
The Western Experience ^ | Jason

Bill Maher is a full time comedian known for his wit, sharp tongue, and edgy material. To those who are familiar with his work many would consider him a talent in the world of "smart" comedy and showbiz. Like all styles that are out there, it is usually hit or miss, and Mr. Maher is no different. He has as many detractors as he has admires. But, Maher is also a little unique when one considers his very opinionated political and personal views. For instance, he professed respect and intrigue in Mike Huckabee, a former Baptist preacher, governor, and presidential candidate. Even more odd than that, he and Trace Atkins, a country music star, celebrity apprentice legend, author, and traditionalist conservative "Redneck" American, are apparently friends, or at least friendly acquaintances.

So as interesting, famous, and talented as Bill Maher is, (I'm probably being a little too charitable because he is also insulting, smug, and a narrow minded cynic) he is still prone to mishaps and miscalculations. Such was the case with his latest effort, Religulous. He tried to combine all the attributes that I already listed with serious scholarship to debunk mainly Christianity. Though, his efforts only showed that theology and New Testament history is not his strong suit. You shouldn't take my word for it, however.

I’m not too concerned about what a deep thinker like Mr. Maher thinks about anything.

Anyone thinking Maher is a “wit” is no better than half right. And his “sharp tongue” is in a league with sophomores everwhere (only generally somewhat less insightful). Maher is one of a legion of fools whose incessant, inane, malignant noise pollutes the airwaves, chat rooms, blogs and pages of American media. He contributes nothing of positive value. His whole raison d’etre is to spread confusion and stale, trite malice.

The woman doth protest too much. He’s smelling the fragrance of death and doesn’t like it.

Maher simply seems to buy the popular mythologies and unquestioned assumptions that often pass for knowledge about early Christian history.

Not too surprising. Maher does the same thing with events that are unfolding right now.

there is nothing as unoriginal as the village atheist, and there is nobody as banal as Bill.
