Turin Exhibition of Christ Exhibits Antique Vestment Work
New Liturgical Movement ^ | April 23, 2010 | SHAWN TRIBE

One of our readers, an American priest in Italy, recently visited the museum of La Venaria Reale in Torino, Italy, where, for the occasion of the exposition of the Shroud of Turin, they are hosting a corresponding exhibition which is focused on images of Christ.

Their exhibition includes various forms of sacred and liturgical art, particularly paintings and sculpture, from the earliest ages of Christendom to the baroque era. It also includes some wonderful antique vestments which our priestly reader sent our way, and which I wished to share with you today.

We were in Turin last week, saw the Shroud. They have done a beautiful job — it is very orderly and well run; when we were in the church, viewing, they read a quiet prayer (in Italian) which was very reverential. Had shuttle buses going, and good parking. Wild driving in Turin, tho. They also had a preview show where they told you what to look for on the Shroud. It was quite lovely.

Oh just WOW! How great it is that you got to see this wondrous piece of cloth! What were your impressions of the cloth? How close did you get? Is it encased in glass? Was the lighting sufficient? Was is shown in the cathedral? Nice to know they did a great job with the crowds and with the information.

It was in the cathedral. We were in the front row. There were maybe 100 people at a time, tho, not a huge crowd at any one time. We had reservations for 10 but went at 8. By the time we left, tour buses had arrived and we were happy to leave. THey had it enclosed in a case, hanging over the altar area, back lit, I think. The preview had showed the different areas and what to look for. It shows up a lot better when shown as a negative, I thot. Hard to see specific things, and yet not. And the preview helped a lot. It was quite moving.
