I am thinking of the Orthodox Church. I am impressed by their martyrs in the middle east and by their adherence to male leadership. My problem is that the nearest is about to 1.5 hours away. The same with LCMS. Francis makes me fear the Catholics will soon be combating all that my Methodists are combating. The other churches in my area are more or less independent, fundamental charisma/holiness/baptistic/cambellite family churches.

I'm a bit puzzled at this point.

Don't worry about that. The Catholic Church moves so slowly that we'll all be long dead by that time.

I believe John MacArthur has the right message. A few West Point men I know who are class of 65 helped me to get back the faith I so much enjoyed as a young boy. One sent me John MacArthur’s study bible. I treasure it.

My opinion as a Catholic is that you should look into the Orthodox Church. Not for the reason you give, but because for a non-Catholic there is a lot of baggage about the CC, so it would be easier to follow our Orthodox brothers
