Romio, a legal immigrant from Bangladesh risks a prison sentence because the Vatican is prosecuting him through a prestigious law firm for selling badges with the face of Pope Francis without having payed royalties, writes infovaticana.com (December 20).
The immigrant was arrested by the Italian Guardia di Finanza because he displayed in his souvenir shop, near the Vatican, four badges with the face of Francis without the permission of the company to which the Vatican has outsourced its brand.
Infovaticana.com concedes that Romio has violated some minor regulation but points out that Francis has insisted on welcoming also illegal immigrants who have violated major norms by entering a country in an unlawful way.
The Catholics have a 50 foot high wall around the Vatican. When it comes to our wall they need to shut up.

What a great story! Francis preaches to everyone about how to treat immigrants. Yet the walls of the Vatican remain. Sure, an immigrant can just walk into the Vatican via St. Peter’s Square. But at dusk, out he must go!
And that immigrant had better not sell any Vatican trinkets without paying royalties. After all, business is business.

The Pope is a typical economics liberal. He preaches socialism. But when it comes to his own affairs, he is a no-nonsense capitalist.
He is also a typical immigration liberal. He preaches free and open immigration. But when it comes to Vatican City, he is a closed-borders nationalist.
