Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

2 Samuel 3

Joab Murders Abner

22 Just then David’s men and Joab returned from a raid and brought with them a great deal of plunder. But Abner was no longer with David in Hebron, because David had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. 23 When Joab and all the soldiers with him arrived, he was told that Abner son of Ner had come to the king and that the king had sent him away and that he had gone in peace.

24 So Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you let him go? Now he is gone! 25 You know Abner son of Ner; he came to deceive you and observe your movements and find out everything you are doing.”

26 Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the cistern at Sirah. But David did not know it. 27 Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.

28 Later, when David heard about this, he said, “I and my kingdom are forever innocent before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner. 29 May his blood fall on the head of Joab and on his whole family! May Joab’s family never be without someone who has a running sore or leprosy[a] or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food.”

30 (Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon.)

31 Then David said to Joab and all the people with him, “Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth and walk in mourning in front of Abner.” King David himself walked behind the bier. 32 They buried Abner in Hebron, and the king wept aloud at Abner’s tomb. All the people wept also.

33 The king sang this lament for Abner:

“Should Abner have died as the lawless die?
34     Your hands were not bound,
    your feet were not fettered.
You fell as one falls before the wicked.”

And all the people wept over him again.

35 Then they all came and urged David to eat something while it was still day; but David took an oath, saying, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!”

36 All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did pleased them. 37 So on that day all the people there and all Israel knew that the king had no part in the murder of Abner son of Ner.

38 Then the king said to his men, “Do you not realize that a commander and a great man has fallen in Israel this day? 39 And today, though I am the anointed king, I am weak, and these sons of Zeruiah are too strong for me. May the Lord repay the evildoer according to his evil deeds!”

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

This Song for Abner was composed in a hurry, and during a time of great stress for David.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name Over All The Earth!
We Worship and Bow Down Before You,
Oh Father,
For You Alone Are Worthy;
You Alone Are Holy;
You Alone Are The One True God Of Abraham!

Lord, as Your Word says,
You have been our dwelling place
throughout all generations.

Before the mountains were born
or you brought forth the earth and the world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

You turn men back to dust,
saying, "Return to dust, O sons of men."
For a thousand years in your sight
are like a day that has just gone by,
or like a watch in the night.

Abba Father, We Are in Awe of Your Magnificence!
We Thank You For Your Glorious Living Word,
Which is Not Only a Guide For Living,
But the Very Foundation of our Laws and Our Liberties.
We Thank You For Your Magnificent Word,
Which We Beg You to Engrave Deeply
Upon The Tablets of Our Hearts.

We Pray for the Leaders of Our Nation,
That they will Respect Our Constitution and Uphold it.
That They will not "..remove the ancient landmark
Which our fathers have set..."

LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We pray for an END to Lies,
Slander, Blood Libel, Propaganda,
And Antisemitism against Your Beloved.
We Pray For an End to Slavery,
Hostage-Taking,
And Piracy wherever it is Practiced Around the World.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,
Christians and Jews,
In Bondage in Hostile lands.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Of the 45 Presidents of the United States, only a handful of them could be considered accomplished musicians. Perhaps it may be because the temperament required to lead a nation is not compatible with that of a musician? I honestly don't know the answer to that. Here are a few Presidents who may or may not have been good musicians, and history tells us whether or not they were good presidents. Here we go:

1. Obama liked to sing. In my humble opinion, he was a lousy singer. And a lousy president too.

2. Bill Clinton played sax. Perhaps that was not the only thing he played.

3. Woodrow Wilson had belonged to a Glee Club during his college years. I have never heard a recording of him singing, so I can't judge his musicianship. His presidency, however...

4. In his diary John Quincy Adams laments that he could never master flute or violin.

5. Harry Truman actually COULD play piano.

6. Andrew Jackson was reportedly quite good on guitar and banjo.

7. Warren Harding could play anything but clarinet or trombone. He is not considered to have been one of our better presidents, though.

8. Richard Nixon was a very good piano player, and actually appeared on the Jack Paar Show.

As you can see, the list of "musician-presidents" is very short, and the list of those who were able to do BOTH jobs exceedingly well is practically non-existent. And yet, King David was able to compose a new song for nearly every occasion, even the death of a former enemy, or the winning of a battle. But no one person, even a "Renaissance Man" like David, can excel in EVERY department. In David's case, he fell short in parenting, as we saw portrayed so tragically in our study of the Kings of Israel and Judah.

David, like the presidents (musicians or not) was HUMAN.

Truman could play the piano, and this display got him in trouble with Bess.

A correction about Warren Harding, he has been maligned by leftist historians from the get-go. He was actually, in my estimation, one of our best Presidents (economically, I'd place him as probably THE best). He and his Treasury Secretary, Andrew Mellon, cut taxes and the size of government and solved the Wilson Recession in record time, unleashing the prosperity of the 1920s. He was the last President, unfortunately, who was able to truly cut the size of government and proving the mantra that doing both works wonders. The large reason why he is hated by leftist historians, who heap praise on the failed President FDR who did precisely the opposite, and left us with programs and spending that we haven't been able to rid ourselves of.

I always wondered why Harding was declared to be “bad”, until I found out he wasn’t. He did have a bad Cabinet Secretary (Albert Fall at Interior) which resulted in Teapot Dome, but that had no effect on the economy and Harding didn’t personally benefit. It’s almost a given a President is likely to have rotten or corrupt Cabinet members.

Harding did have some moral faults, but otherwise his philosophy was to just get out of the way and let the people flourish and do their thing. Exactly the kind of President we need more than the opposite. As the Louis Prima song went, he enjoyed himself (because it was shorter than you think). Sadly, we lost him too soon (just 2+ years into office). It’s curious Coolidge is so much more well-received, but without Harding, there’d have been no Coolidge. He just kept on with Harding’s policies and his people.

As for FDR... too long to cover his faults.
