Notre Dame Rector: Fragile Cathedral Might Not be Saved

PARIS (AP) — The rector of Notre Dame Cathedral says the Paris landmark is still so fragile that there’s a “50% chance” the structure might not be saved, because scaffolding installed before this year’s fire is threatening the vaults of the Gothic monument.

Monsignor Patrick Chauvet said restoration work isn’t likely to begin until 2021 — and described his “heartache” that Notre Dame couldn’t hold Christmas services this year, for the first time since the French Revolution.

“Today it is not out of danger,” he told The Associated Press on the sidelines of Christmas Eve midnight Mass in a nearby church. “It will be out of danger when we take out the remaining scaffolding.”

Get some German engineers over there and American construction teams and fix it.

I rue the day that Muslims figured out how to operate matches.

What an apt metaphor for Christianity in Europe.

Stop. While the fire was still burning they had done a thorough investigation and determined conclusively that it wasn’t arson by muslims. After it was out they initiated an even more thorough investigation to determine the true cause and the results of that investigation showed .... uh .... hmmm ... I can’t find any results of that investigation. Well at least they ruled out muslim extremist arson.

France will tear it down and build a mosque there, and the Pope will give it his blessing.

And in their investigation I hope they ask this guy who was actually shown on live TV in the tower while the fire was raging. I wonder who he is? Well, I'm sure he belongs in a Catholic Cathedral.

I always thought fire/heat ruins stone and makes it crumble.

Is the 50% chance from a careful analysis of the structural strength and pressure on each load bearing element? Or is it the lazy man's "it might happen or it might not"?

50% chance all life will be destoyed by meteor in 2020. Well it could happen so it's 50% likely.

“Might not be saved” is French for “send money”.

“France will tear it down and build a mosque there”

If that happens I pray that French construction workers litter the site with pig blood and other pork products. And that it is plagued everyday by incidents of dropped pork and so forth.
I’m sick of Christians saying turn the other cheek. There’s a time for that and a time to fight back.

I have a fireman friend who went to Paris in October and he said there is no way it wasn’t set deliberately!

“Get some German engineers over there and American construction teams and fix it.”

I’ve never read a history of the Notre Dame Cathedral construction, however the Washington Cathedral apparently was built somewhat similar to Notre Dame, and taking a few biblical references to Solomon’s Temple no stone was cut on site to reduce the amount of hammering which according to scriptures was done because of the sacredness of the site.

So, (if I was in charge of the world)..
Let it be reconstructed in a very traditional manner by cutting the stones off site transporting them to the site and hiring artisans for a good wage and not taking taxes out of your paychecks until the project is completed.

The whole reason Notre Dame was built by volunteer artisans back when it was first constructed was that there were no taxes, so people could donate their time freely to the Glory of God in the construction of a great Cathedral worthy of his name.

That. If they wanted it saved, it could be. Leaving it exposed to the weather and in a weakened state will have it in rubbles before any construction begins.

If we had a true Pope, it’d be half repaired already and Christmas mass would have at least been held in the parking lot.

Excellent comment. And I wondered about that myself. Why didn’t they do that?

I got an idea. Take the frigging scaffolding down!
