Sounds very 19th century, later 19th century to me.
I got the same impression. Pious Fiction was very popular in that time. "Ben Hur" by General Lew Wallace was a huge best seller. I love "Ben Hur" but it isn't Scripture. This letter has the same rhythm and style as the writing of that era.
