One has to be a little cautious here. It is far from certain that the "left everything" specifically referred to wives, especially in light of 1 Cor 9:5-6 where Peter is specifically named by Paul.

Nonetheless, from the perspective of a "mostly" life-long Anglican (now Tiber swimmer) the pastoral case for unmarried clergy is compelling. Perhaps more so than the theological.

Follow a priest for a week. Thus is not a 10 hour daily job.

Your family must come first.

His family is the parishiobers and those in hospitals and dying.

A wife is another burden to please. Kids....more burdens to please.

His is a life of sacrifice and sacrements. He said Yes.
