U.S. Bishops Ponder Plan to Combat Declines in Hispanic Catholicism
The Tablet (UK) ^ | 6/14/23 | John Lavenburg

PROSPECT HEIGHTS — A few months after a Pew Research Center study showed that the number of U.S. Hispanics who identify as Catholic has drastically dropped over the past decade, the nation’s bishops will vote on a plan to overhaul the U.S. Church’s approach to Hispanic ministry.

Toward the end of the first U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops general assembly public session on June 15, bishops will hear a presentation on a new 10-year “National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry,” which they will then vote on the next morning. It needs a simple majority to pass.

Alejandro Aguilera-Titus, assistant director for Hispanic Affairs at the USCCB, previously told The Tablet that if passed, it will mark the first such plan since 1987. He said the plan is a direct result of the four-year V Encuentro process that concluded in 2020, and it places an emphasis on youth and young adults.

“Through that process, it became very clear that the Church in the United States needs to focus as a strong priority on the engagement of Hispanic youth and young adults,” said Aguilera-Titus.

“I am convinced, and I think the bishops are too, that the Church needs to invest very significantly in their engagement, accompaniment, mentoring, and formation of Hispanic young adults for leadership in Church and society.”

Traditionally more scaled-back than the bishops’ annual fall general assembly, this year’s spring general assembly still has a number of notable agenda items, including presentations and votes on a new plan for the formation of priests and ethical and religious directives for Catholic health care services, a vote on whether to draft a pastoral statement from the U.S. bishops addressing persons with disabilities in the life of the Church, updates on the National Eucharistic Revival and the ongoing Synod on Synodality, and Archbishop.........

They never had this problem when all Masses worldwide were Traditional Latin Masses.

It’s a shame that they can’t figure this out for themselves. The same goes for their feeble attempt at a Eucharistic Revival. Just reinstall the communion rails and offer Holy Communion on the tongue.

Build the rails, and they will come.

Good for them! Hopefully they found a church that believes in and teaches the true gospel. Catholicism does NOT teach the true biblical gospel and instead teaches that you can not ask Christ for forgiveness yourself, they worship Mary who is just a sinful human like the rest of us, their church is filled with idols and relics that they worship, and more recently have began to teach that homosexuality is not a sin as stated clearly in the bible. Worse of all the Pope believes himself to be able to change God’s word, the bible. As cults go I have to say that the Roman Catholic Church is leading as many or more people straight to the lake of fire as Islam is.

Amen to that. Our young former pastor had them installed not long before he left and the people, young and old, seem to love them. I can tell you for myself it is a much more beautiful, humbling, and transcendent experience. It makes you more hungry for the Eucharist, somehow.

Congratulations, Tony, almost every word in this sentence is wrong. It's really quite an impressive achievement to be that far off in the weeds.

Worse of all the Pope believes himself to be able to change God’s word, the bible.

Who told you the Bible was God's word? Who told you what books compose the New Testament? What was their authority for telling you that?

I have good news for you: The Pope can believe himself competent to amend the Holy Scriptures from here 'til Saturday, and he still won't be. As a Catholic, I can assure you that it's above his pay grade.

The Catholic Church is a cult? What religion are you? Why do you consider Catholicism a cult? What are your criteria for such a judgement?

Your personal, fallible opinion. And an un-informed and mean-spirited one at that. I’ll pray that you be delivered from the spirits of hate and ignorance— you could surely use it.

Here’s an example of what you’ve referred to. When I lived and worked in Washington I regularly attended the Tridentine Mass downtown on Sundays at Old St. Mary’s. On several occasions I observed a Justice of the Supreme Court kneeling at the altar for Communion, and right beside him kneeling would be a person “off the streets” attired in tattered clothing. That sight and the symbolism of it spoke volumes to me and actually brought tears to my eyes.

I know that church quite well. And I too have seen the late Antonin Scalia at those masses, along with Patrick Buchanan.

It's a shame that Frankencardinal Wilting Gregory shut down those Masses.

He is not completely wrong, perhaps a bit overstated but not at all completely wrong.

Catholicism teaches you MUST confess to a priest any mortal sin (outside the concept of what they call perfect contrition which is taught in such a way as to strongly imply it is near impossible to achieve), therefore there is indeed an added intermediary before Christ in Catholicism)

Mary has been elevated to be equally sinless as God as recently as Pope Pius XII. This directly contradicts the idea that all have fallen short of the Glory of God and have sinned. In that belief Mary does not need God to go to heaven which completely wipes out the need for the resurrection as Mary did not need Christ’s sacrifice. There is another way to heaven.

While the Catechism as of now would view homosexuality as a sin many “RC” churches are indeed preaching in the name of Catholicism that homosexuality is not a sin and much of the “RC” leadership that is in the news are actually advocating for the lifestyle. So while it is not accepted doctrine it is also not being corrected. This leads to an implied cultural understanding it may indeed be acceptable. A horrible position for the Church leadership to take, they are allowing this perverse view to grow within the zeitgeist.

Put down the Jack Chick tract and walk away.

Such ignorance of the faith in the age of the internet is willful blindness.

Also didn’t Jesus say in the upper room:

““Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Sounds like the bible doesn’t match your Protestant tradition. Maybe you’re wrong about other things too.

Was the Justice you referenced the late Antonin Scalia? Or perhaps one who is still with us? If so, please don't name him.

Reading the above triggered a thought I had not previously considered. I wonder to what extend the many Prelates like Gregory and Francis who are hostile to the Latin Mass are so simply because it angers them that those who are dedicated to it are not inclined to be subservient to their authority.

Instead of arrogant vitriol try actually engaging. Where exactly did I mistate anything? I grew up Catholic and spent a great deal of thought and research into my position. You responded by simply arguing by assertion.

Have you even read the Chaticsim? I also find it interesting when a Catholic defender uses scripture to justify a man made tradition but cries foul citing sola scriptura when another fires back with scripture that contradicts Catholicism’s over reliance of a verse to justify thier rituals
