Openly gay Mt. Pleasant author crushed by apparent comments from local pastor

BEAL CITY, Mich. — A Beal City author, who has been openly gay for decades, is surprised to find himself at the center of controversy.

He read his children's book to a pre-K class at a local private Catholic school, and a week later, it appears the pastor of the associated church issued a public apology to parents and parishioners — not over the content of the book, but rather, the person reading.

“I came into a classroom to share the joy and love that I have for what I created, and to share that with other people. Why my sexuality has anything to do with that? Anything? It makes me mad.” Dominic Thrasher was brought to tears when sharing the events that have unfolded over the last week.

"For a second, he made me want to stop," Thrasher said. "I didn't want to do it anymore.”

Thrasher called Wednesday one of the worst days of his life. A week before, he was all smiles.

“It went amazing! Oh my gosh, it was so much fun," he said.

Thrasher, 44, grew up in Mt. Pleasant and made the transition from acting to writing during the pandemic.

“I’ve always wanted to, I just was scared to start," he said.

Thrasher has now written a series of books called The Adventures of Cece and the Sheriff.

“Sheriff is my dog and Cece is my sister’s dog," he explained. "They were playing in my room when I was trying to figure out what to write about and it went from there.”

Since March is National Reading Month, Thrasher was invited by his friend to read his first book to her pre-K class at St. Joseph the Worker School.

The Church said that he does not represent the values of their Catholic faith.

He was so upset that he wants to Pastor removed.

Why remove the Pastor?
Is it because he really does not represent the values of their Catholic faith?

I think this is about right (the pastor’s response, I mean).

He admitted that the content of the book was OK, fine. But did not want to endorse the author being in person w/ the children. The odds and ends need to get used to the fact that most people believe that what they do is disgusting, so they don’t choose to embrace it or affirm it.

Analogy: I would want Oscar Wilde’s “Happy Prince” or “Picture of Dorian Gray” to be read to children. But I wouldn’t want children exposed to Oscar Wilde, the person.

There has always been something slimy to me about “gay” persons who think very religous persons are somehow obligated to deny what their faith tells them and just “go along” with “gay” persons who deny that faith. There is plenty of “religous” venues “gay” persons can comfortably belong to, yet some of them, the worst of them, think everyone is supposed to agree with them, and everyone is supposed to change if they don’t. It’s silly and it’s a slimy practice.

I think the priest should be more concerned about identifying and removing the pedophile priests within the Catholic church rather than condemning a gay children's book writer.

Who is the priest to publicly judge this man, I thought that was God's job?

Well you thought wrong. God’s jon is to judge your immortal soul as to its worthiness of attaining eternal life. No human being can know for certain whether another human being is justified in the eyes of God.

That, however, is a very different issue than whether human beings can create ethical norms and laws stemming from those norms. Which I hope you’ll agree that they can. This necessarily implies that “judging” will occur quite often. We can try to create a culture that doesn’t judge in this sense. In other words a hyper-tolerant society...perhaps even a society that punishes those that judge even the most base behaviors...kinds like what we have now in The West. Hopefully, I don’t have to try too hard to convince you as to how disasterous that’s been.

Having a flaming homo present his book to Catholic school children is the problem because it tacitly endorses homosexuality and contradicts the goal of providing a proper moral foundation for children. In the Catholic faith, homosexuality is sinful and contrary to natural law and the Bible. Applying that instruction from God and practical wisdom requires keeping homos away from school kids.

In the Catholic faith, homosexuality is sinful and contrary to natural law and the Bible.

Since when has that kept homosexual pedophiles out of the Catholic priesthoods and the church's decades' long attempt to cover it up and the hundreds of millions of dollars in lawsuits they've had to pay out for their complicity in the crimes?

Other than being gay, this man has done nothing but write a children's book and read it to the children of his church. Knowing full well that the man was gay, why did the pastor invite him for the reading of his book? Could it be that one of the parishioners complained, forcing the pastor to issue his condemnation of the man? We'll never know...

Correct me if I'm wrong since I don't believe in religion due to the hypocrisy, but wasn't it Jesus who said: "“He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.” .......?

Due to the moral and prudential risks involved, homosexuals should usually not be admitted to or maintained in the Catholic priesthood. Nor should they be permitted to instruct or have close contact with school children. Failures in either respect are contrary to good sense.

As for the "he who is without sin" line, it is more than just a call to balance and equity in the application of moral standards.

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged, For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?" – Matthew 7:1-3

My guess is that even though you "do not believe in religion," you might find merit in that particular religious teaching for reflection on and remedy of one's own failings.

Many parish priests don’t have immediate oversight over the schools associated with their parish, but do offer guidance to the principals and administrators. As per the article (yes, I know, I actually read it), the pastor did not invite him, the author’s friend the Pre-K teacher did. That was her mistake. Being a friend of the author, she likely knew he was not only gay, but “gay married” to another man, which is a scandal in the Catholic church. I doubt she told adminstration that she was inviting a publicly practicing homosexual to read to young kids. I also doubt that this man is as famous as he thinks he is, so no, “everybody” (in administration at least) didn’t know those little details of his life. But apparently some parishioners or parents were familiar with him, and notified the pastor after the fact.

All people who instruct children at Catholic Schools are considered to be lay ministers to them and are required to live according to Catholic teaching. Being in a public gay relationship is a scandal, and people in those positions will not be allowed to interact with Catholic school children. This has been upheld in many courts.

As it was, these kids were too young to understand, but there was still risk of scandal if other older students, parents, or parishioners thought that the school was cool with openly gay people interacting with kids. The priest wrote a very generic post, reassuring parents lest they think that drag queen readings might be forthcoming.

He didn’t mention the author’s name, his homosexuality, the book, or even that the reader was the author of a book at all. Was this guy the only guest reader during National Reading Month? How did he know the priest was referring to him?

As for your particular obscession with pedophile priests, that doesn’t have any bearing on this particular event. Just because a wrong has been done, doesn’t mean other wrongs should be allowed.

My $0.02
Love,
O2
