During our three-week stay in Israel in 1984, we stayed at three Kibbutzim. One of them was different than the others in that it had been founded by a Christian Community. I remembered the name of the Kibbutz, and found it on the Internet. It's Still There!

Today's Name appears only once in Scripture that I know of, and once in a Christmas Carol, way down in the Fourth Verse. With Lyrics by Felix Mendelssohn, it is a collaboration of Giants.

The Name is "Desire of All Nations". (hemdat kal hagoyim) This makes about as much sense as the seeming oxymoron "Christian Kibbutz", or "Jewish Christmas Song".

Even the Hebrew word for "Nations" goyim has a little exclusionary tinge to it. When we were kids, that's just how it was. Neighborhoods, especially in Boston, were essentially ethnic enclaves. Dorchester was evenly divided between Jews and Irish, North End and East Boston were Italian, Roslindale was Greek and Arab-Christian, and Roxbury (not to be confused with WEST Roxbury) was mostly Black. There were no actual borders between theses communities, and nobody was forced to live anywhere, but the situation evolved that way. I grew up in Mattapan, which was mostly Jewish, and then we moved to Roslindale. I was eating Matzoh, Hummus, Greek Salad, and Calamata Olives decades before these wonderful ethnic foods became part of American Cuisine!

The Prophet Haggai is not as well known as some of the other Hebrew Prophets, but here he is, giving us a Beautiful Name for the Jewish Messiah. He calls The Messiah "The Desire of All Nations". This indicates that The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob will send His Messiah to ALL People, not just the Jewish People. Even the word "kal" , which means "ALL" is part of the Name, even though that isn't the way it appears in Wesley's Carol. (I suppose he wanted the lyrics to scan properly).

We ALL want, need, hunger for, DESIRE our Redeemer, no matter where we are from.
