It has a wonderful ending with the two realizing they just ate with the Messiah. I believe the revelation of Who Jesus was kept from them for us to get a better understanding as well.

Jesus never does anything without having an excellent reason—or ten.

Your presumption fails here: I'm not familiar with that painting. Looks like an amalgamation of Rockwell and Dalí.

It's the legend of "Our Lady's Juggler" - retold in several sources, including Tomie de Paola's delightful children's book.

It seems that an itinerant juggler and mountebank took monastic vows. He was illiterate and had no particular skills, so he worked in the fields and nobody thought much of him. But he had a particular devotion to the Christ Child.

He was in the chapel late at night to pray after his day's work was done. He used to look at the sculpture of the Christ Child in his mother's arms and worry that he looked sad. One night, he decided that he would do something to cheer Him up . . . so he got all of his juggler's paraphernalia out from under his bed, dressed in his costume, and did all of his best juggling and tricks for the Child.

Some of the monks heard the commotion and were about to interfere, when the juggler stopped, exhausted and out of breath (and out of practice). Just then, the Christ Child clapped and laughed, and the Blessed Mother came down from her niche and wiped the sweat from his brow.

Just a medieval legend - but a sweet one, I think!

The painting is by Glyn Warren Philpot, RA (1928).

Anatole France made a short story about it. There's also an opera by Massenet, and quite a number of paintings and books.

Don't worry - it's simply a pious legend, not an article of faith.

If you look at the original Grimm's Childrens-and-Household Tales, there are dozens of this sort of story. My children loved them when they were little . . . and we weren't even Catholic then :-)

More on Tomie dePaola - a wonderful artist who brought the great Italian Renaissance traditions forward into the present: Genealogies of Modernity - The Artistic Imaginary of Tomie dePaola

His children's books are *all* marvelous!

Thanks for this introduction to him and his work. However, at this stage my art interest has narrowed to the scriptural, which does not seem to coincide with his.

It’s scriptural, but perhaps at second hand. DePaola is constantly echoing the greats of the Italian Renaissance— especially Giotto and Botticelli. You can see that clearly in the illustrations for “The Clown of God” - compare the crowd in the town square to the people that gather around the edges of Giotto’s paintings. And they are first and foremost religious artists.
