Staggering 26 Percent of Southern Baptists are Registered Democrats
Disntr ^ | April 20, 2024 | staff

No wonder the denomination is in such shambles and on the brink of irrelevancy and death. In a recent report released by Lifeway Research and conducted by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS), a staggering 26 percent of Southern Baptists are registered as Democrats, which signals a drastic ideological shift within a denomination formerly known for its conservative theological and political beliefs.

This startling statistic from the SWBTS’s recent report demonstrates a critical and expanding fault line within the SBC, marking a drift towards the very liberalism the denomination fought hard to purge during the “conservative resurgence” of the 1980s.

This resurgence, which once seemed to fortify the SBC against secular influences and liberal theology, is now unraveling. The past decade, under leaders like Russell Moore, a former Democrat staffer who once headed the denomination’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), has witnessed a gradual but increasingly unmistakable erosion of the SBC’s conservative values. Moore’s tenure and influence reflect a broader acceptance of progressive ideologies that are opposed to the SBC’s historical commitments to biblical inerrancy and orthodox Christian doctrines.

Thanks to weak-minded men and limp-wristed leaders—leaders like David Platt, Russell Moore, and others, who promote ideological pluralism in the Church rather than being of one accord, as the Scriptures command—today’s SBC, despite a majority that still professes conservative values, is increasingly lenient towards aberrant political and theological views. This has allowed progressive philosophies to take root and flourish within the denomination, subtly undermining its doctrinal integrity. Movements like “Racial Reconciliation” and “Living Out” have introduced and normalized ideas that are more closely aligned with secular or liberal Christian movements than with Scripture.

The acceptance of Democrat-aligned members into the SBC not only contradicts the denomination’s longstanding conservative ethos but also raises alarms about its future direction. The Bible’s teachings are clear and non-negotiable on issues central to the Democrat agenda, such as the push to increase access to abortion, the redefinition of marriage and sexual indoctrination of children, including the push for sex changes for elementary-aged children, and the role of personal responsibility in societal structure. Yet, these biblical truths are being overshadowed by a rising tide of leftist ideologies that compromise the very core of Southern Baptist identity.

The implications of this shift are grave—the SBC risks following the path of the mainline Protestant denominations that have abandoned Scripture and embraced leftism to become increasingly irrelevant—or worse, completely apostate. The infiltration of progressivism into the SBC threatens not just the theological purity but also the cultural and social impact of the Southern Baptist Convention.

But what else should we expect when the denominational leadership focuses more on what the world thinks of them than they are about being obedient and true to God’s word?

Staggering Southern Baptists? Are those the Baptists who drink when no other Baptists are around?

Those Democrats should be asked if they’re OK with grown, naked men sharing locker rooms with their elementary and middle school-aged daughters.

Because that is exactly what they’re supporting.

drinking Alcohol while being a Southern Baptist is not what it use to be, Baptist in the past wrote into the church covenants to abstain from the sale and consumption of alcohol thinking that alcohol has no redeeming value because some folks tend to overindulge and that is a problem from the biblical stand point, the bible speaks of alcohol being good for the stomach and Jesus making new wine at the wedding celebration. A lot of Churches in the SBC have removed the alcohol mention from their covenants, mine has not but many have.

“..for whatever reason, blacks fly to Dims like moths to a flame....”

Good analogy.
And with the same devestating results; and like moths, they don’t see the danger until they’re scorched beyond recognition.

The SBC has been infiltrated by the left. Russell Moore did an incredible amount of damage. But this blog you keep pimping are there to cause chaos and confusion. They are not transparent about who they are and what their beliefs are. They are bomb throwers and anyone reading anything from them needs to do so with this in mind and use spiritual discernment.

I am a SBC lifelong church member from Alabama, but I have never voted for a Crat. I never voted for Howell Heflin or any of the other important Bama Dims. A childhood friend ran for judge once as a Dim, but I voted against his ### to.

I Timothy 5.23 (drink a little wine for your stomach's sake).

Interesting about the changes in covenants.

The old joke was that Jews don't recognize Jesus as the Messiah, Protestants don't recognize the pope as the head of the church, and Baptists don't recognize each other in the liquor store.

What about your denom?

U.S. Catholics are split down the middle politically. Around half of Catholic registered voters (48%) describe themselves as Republicans or say they lean toward the Republican Party, while roughly the same share (47%) identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party, according to Pew Research Center polls in 2018 and 2019. In 2016, 52% of Catholics backed Republican Donald Trump while 44% voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton..

Catholics chose Democrat Barack Obama over Republican John McCain in 2008 by a margin of 54% to 45%, and divided their votes almost exactly in half in 2012 (when Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney) and 2000 (when Bush defeated Democrat Al Gore). - https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2020/09/15/8-facts-about-catholics-and-politics-in-the-u-s/

The parties have changed

Southern Democrats used to be the Conservatives, while Northeastern Republicans were the Liberals.

“”””Southern Democrats used to be the Conservatives, while Northeastern Republicans were the Liberals.””””

To me California versus Texas is the best demonstration of how a socially liberal GOP state California, was destined to be absorbed by the left, while a social conservative state Texas, had the core values and the organic conservatism to survive the left.

Social conservatism and social liberalism seems to be the key to whether a peoples are by nature conservative or liberal.

California was conservative until all the New Yorkers moved there, as Billy Joel put it, “Los Angelenos all come from somewhere….”

California was never conservative, which is my point, it was liberal republican, and New York didn’t change it.

Conservative enough to elect Reagan twice for Governor and twice for POTUS.

Yes, they were liberal republicans and voted republican, what they lacked was deep conservatism and they were no match for the hardened sharper left that hit them post 60s and the state’s soft GOP was whittled down into nothing.

Texas was Democrat but hard core social conservative, and they battled the left and became conservative republicans.

Southern Baptists — they went off the deep end a long time ago. And, I believe there are SBC-sponsored NGO facilities helping bring in illegals at the border. I am not sure — have heard both yes and no on that one.

“A lot of Churches in the SBC have removed the alcohol mention from their covenants, mine has not but many have.”

I believe it’s still in all Covenants that I’ve seen recently.

“... the sale and use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage” is how I recall it. Used to have it memorized.
