Muskogee church 'devastated' after vandals break century-old statue

MUSKOGEE, Okla. — Muskogee's catholic community is in shock after its only church in the city was left picking up the pieces of a cherished relic all but destroyed by vandals.

Leaders of St. Joseph Catholic Church said a five-foot-tall plaster statue of the Virgin Mary and one of the Holy Family were adored by generations of members.

"The one of Holy Mother, the one that was pretty well pulverized in the parking lot, that has a history that dates all the way back to 1893," church manager Lucille Ferguson told 2 News.

Father Robert Matthew Dye said he knows one worshiper who touched it before every mass for years.

"It's just something that always touched me when I would see her coming in and doing that," Dye said. "And when I saw it, my thoughts came to, 'What's she going to think?'"

It shocked maintenance manager Luis Carbone to discover the storied statue in shambles from vandalism on the morning of April 19.

"It was a pain in my chest. I almost cried. It was real, real bad," Carbone said.

The church's security camera shows three people at the catholic school's playground just after midnight April 19.

The three then walk by the entrance to the main building and topple its Holy Family statue and the Virgin Mary. Only the latter, which is said to be far more valuable, was completely broken.

As of April 22, the statues are still left as they were found because the church is waiting for an insurance adjuster to check the damage.

However, church leaders said there is simply no replacing a relic like the Virgin Mary one.

I'm going to take a wild guess here.

They destroyed a plaster statue of the Virgin Mary because they can't kill a baby in abortion.

There is a video of the crime on the link

Muskogee Police Department asks anyone with information on the case to call its Crime Stoppers tip line at 918-682-2677.

It’s plaster....piece it together and reproduce it...It’s not like it’s bronze...

The perp is just another hedonistic babykiller.

Either that, or maybe a follower of a certain peaceful religion.

Top people in the liberal/progressive Catholic Church teach ‘the old rules don’t matter’ and then they’re surprised when this type of thing happens. It’s an interconnected system...

Some of their statues have been dropped during celebrations when glorifying them. Were the parishoners outraged then?

Are you seriously equating an accidental dropping of statues to an intentional act of destruction.

I and 2 brothers were born in Muskogee. This is a sick incident. Merle Haggard insisted that such things don’t go on in Muskogee. That was then.

almost got severely injured.

I have been ALMOST KILLED!!!! in several incidents involving transportation. But I walked away unscathed.

"Almost injured" is a scary way of saying "uninjured".

Now ... Wanton destruction of other peoples' property, such as the incident in the OP, is a step toward wanton destruction of other people.

But these people are nasty idolatrous papists, so who cares, right?

"Adored" has a theological meaning. Catholics should not "adore" statues. We VENERATE the saints and heroes and holy things they represent. If it a statue of Christ, then it could be an aid to help us adore CHRIST HIMSELF.

Sloppy language, and I think "adore" was meant in the vernacular (e.g. I adore just cooked Krispy Kreme doughnuts). It is better to clarify, though.

I actually attended Mass at that church in 2008. It was not a very good experience. The statue might be old, but the church itself is one of those church in the semi-circles. After Communion, when we tried to pray, the older gentleman who was an usher insisted on starting a conversation with us. He would not get the hint, even though he was of a generation that should have know what we were trying to do.
