Gun FReepers -- I am seeking clarification on a "deer rifle" that can serve as an adequate firearm for someone beginning to hunt game with larger caliber center-fire scoped rifle. Considering an upgrade into. 308 Winchester for some long shooting. Mostly predator hunting but also some competition. Lots of folks pointing me to the Remington 700 but I'm not getting real excited about that particular gun. Don't like that particular nylon stock and the action seems loose. No AKs, that might come later. I have all the handguns I need, as far as She Who Must Be Obeyed knows anyway. Might pick up another or two along the way, but I want a long gun. Don't know squat about semi-auto rifles, but I am a good learner.
