Legislative Update... So far only one bill has made it out of committee. SB1645, this bill made the headlines of the Nashville paper and has been one of the lead stories on Chanel 5 news because it puts "guns on school grounds." The only member of the Senate Judiciary to vote against the bill was Sen. Rosalind Kurita(D- Clarksville). She is adamamntly opposed to guns on school property- apparently she is concerned about school kids breaking into cars on school property, taking guns and shooting everyone. The House Judiciary Committee was in session yesterday and today. So far only one of four bills that were on notice was Senator Cooper's bill regarding school grounds. That bill has a chance of approval with some modifications. The committe did address law enforcement's bill for off duty officers. Senator Kyle and Cohen were quite vocal about their opposition to the proposal that anyone be allowed to have a gun in a place where alcohol is served or, according to Kyle, in retail liquor stores. The Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on 4/24(Thursday) on several Gun issues... pertaining primarily to the right to carry laws. These include SB 1429 Enacts Handgun Carry Permit Records Disclosure Act. Amends TCA 10-7-55... this one is very important in keeping permit records confidential, not providing a shopping list for thieves.SB0781 Provides that concealed carry permits apply to firearms rather than handguns.
