It's been a full week since Mary and the others claim they saw Jesus risen from the dead--but Thomas wasn't there, and still he has not seen Him. And Thomas is the kind of person who needs to see and touch before he will believe.
And then, in walks Jesus! He knows all about Thomas' doubt, and He confronts him directly: "Look! Touch! Stop doubting and believe!"
My dad taught that to me, and I sang it often to my kids and my grandkids. I even saw someone sing it to Johnny Carson on the Tonight show--I'm struggling to remember who it was: Sammy Davis Jr., Bob Newhart, Robin Williams, Danny Kaye....It will come to me.
I was born in ‘49. My G.I. dad had just graduated from UCLA. In ‘54 the Bruins won their only national championship in football, so he bought our first TV so he could watch their games. I was five, saw those little players running around, and looked around at the back of the set in order to see them. Later I graduated from USC, so every year we would watch the big game together.
I still have my 1959 Little League Directory, listing every boy with his address and parents. Between the majors and minors there were 16 teams of 15 players each, or 240 kids. There were plenty of brother-sets, but that still left nearly 200 families. Yet in that entire directory there is only one single-parent family.
It is quite a puzzle to me why Jesus made them wait all day to see him. I suspect you've put your finger on it: His resurrection should not have been a surprise for them, so He dragged it out to highlight their thickness.

After Mary Magdalene’s early-morning report of seeing the risen Jesus, the apostles have heard nothing else all day. Now two have arrived from Emmaus, telling of their hours-long meeting with Jesus.
As they discuss all this, suddenly Jesus Himself is standing there!
Thirty tears ago while driving at night, a pothole broke my axle, costing me $500+ (although not apparently damaging my brain). So I sued the county in Small Claims Court.
When my case was heard, the County’s lawyer simply raised “assumption of risk” as its defense—that is, by using the road I had taken that risk upon myself. The judge agreed and found for the County.
Thanks for this introduction to him and his work. However, at this stage my art interest has narrowed to the scriptural, which does not seem to coincide with his.
