This morning, Sgt. Shawn Farrell will arrive in the Hudson Valley and be formally escorted to his home in Accord. Farrell died April 28 when forces attacked his unit with small arms fire in Nejrab District, Kapisa province, in Afghanistan. He graduated in 2008 from Rondout Valley High School and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light) in Fort Drum, New York. Beth Modica, 44, a former assistant district attorney in Rockland County and Queens, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to counts including statutory rape, sex abuse and endangering children. Bail was set at $75,000. Her husband, the Spring Valley police chief, is "not implicated whatsoever," Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said. The 35-count indictment says that, beginning in July, Modica had sex with a 16-year-old, as well as oral sex with that boy and a 15-year-old. The judge issued orders of protection for the boys. Modica also is accused of drinking with children at her home and smoking marijuana with them...

It should be a no-brainer that the Republican Congress will get voted out of power tomorrow. After all, with its indulgent permission, George Bush has given away our environment, made a mockery of science, cavorted with felons, ignored our Constitution, lost our standing in the world, run up our deficit, sent our young people to senseless deaths, ignored the poor and flipped the bird at the middle class. Plus, he smirked while he did it all. I hate it when a president smirks.

Last week, during the brouhaha over Bush saying "sh--" in front of an open mic, I confess I was strangely pleased that the guy swears now and then. He was talking to Tony ("Yo Blair") at the G-8 summit in St. Petersburg, and they were discussing the only news of the day that mattered - Israel and Hezbollah and that whole mess. Neither man knew that an open mic was capturing their conversation...
