  • Waldorf schools and Rudolph Steiner questions (vanity)

    12 March 2024
What does anyone here know about the Waldorf education system and the person upon who it is based, Rudolph Steiner? The school near us flies a flag with an image of the earth on it; no US flag. I know they are into biodynamics. Most of the folks I know who are really into biodynamics are usually pretty out there. I also know that many of the people who pioneered various education systems that came out of Germany during the era of John Dewey were socialists or strongly leaned that way. What constructive information can you provide other than nut...

A criminal justice professor who has worked at various California colleges pleaded guilty Thursday after being charged with setting a series of blazes near the massive Dixie Fire in 2021. Gary Stephen Maynard, 49, pleaded guilty to three counts of arson to federal property in Sacramento federal court before U.S. District Judge Daniel J. Calabretta. Maynard, who is being held without bail in the Yuba County Jail, was arrested in August 2021 after a three-week investigation that included the use of a tracking device hidden on his vehicle by authorities who followed his movements throughout Northern California for hundreds of...

HONOLULU (AP) — The last of the 100 known victims of the wildfire that destroyed Maui’s historic town of Lahaina in August was identified Friday as a 70-year-old woman whose husband, sister and several other relatives also died in the fire. Maui police said they identified the victim as Lydia Coloma based on the context of where the remains were found, rather than through DNA or other positive identification methods. Her husband, along with a sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew, also died in the fire, said her sister-in-law, Tina Acosta, in Honolulu. Coloma was from the Ilocos Sur province in...

Evan Neumann, charged with felonies for assaulting police officers during the riot, spoke to a Press Democrat reporter by phone from Belarus. He has been living in that country, an ally of Russia, since August 2021, when he fled across the border from Ukraine. Belarus granted him political asylum in early 2022 While his convictions about the 2020 election haven’t changed much, Evan Neumann says that if he could do it again he would not have traveled to Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2021, to protest Congress’ ratification of the vote. Neumann still questions whether the election was fairly tabulated,...

The day after the deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century destroyed a seaside community on Maui, the barrage of 911 calls didn’t stop: Reports of missing people, stranded family members and confused tourists trapped without food or water lit up the emergency lines every few minutes, interspersed with reports of new fires starting and older ones flaring back up. The 911 recordings from the morning and early afternoon of Aug. 9 were the third batch of calls released by the Maui Police Department in response to a public record request. They show how first responders and emergency dispatchers — many...

SACRAMENTO — Agustin Guzman spends hours in bumper-to-bumper traffic and crosses an international border just to get to his college classes. But it’s worth it. Though he’s a resident of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, he pays the same tuition as a student four miles away from Laredo, Texas, thanks to a long-standing state law. “At some point, I stopped believing I could go to college,” said Agustin, 24, a senior at Texas A&M International University. “But now, I tell people that I cross every day — that I do three hours on the bridge just to get a college education.” Soon,...

“ How L.A.’s bird population is shaped by historic redlining and racist loan practices” On a recent afternoon in L.A.’s Boyle Heights neighborhood, Christian Benitez and Eric M. Wood stood outside a corner liquor store searching for birds. The researchers spotted a house sparrow and pulled binoculars to their eyes. “They’re all over the shrubbery in Boyle Heights,” said Wood, an associate professor of ecology at Cal State Los Angeles. Among the most ubiquitous and abundant songbirds in the world, house sparrows are urban creatures that thrive where people do. They’re resilient, adaptable and aggressive, and are found around buildings...
  • 160 Firefighters Have to Abandon Their Camp Because of Persistent Bears in Canada

    09/05/2023 5:27:36 PM PDT · by rey · 38 replies
A camp for firefighters battling a British Columbia wildfire had to be shut down because of “persistent bear activity,” Canada wildlife officials reported. About 160 firefighters at a camp near Goldbridge to fight the Downton Lake wildfire relocated to T’it’q’et First Nation and Lillooet community facilities, officials said on Twitter, now rebranded as X. The British Columbia Wildlife Service said it ordered the closure to “ensure the safety” of firefighters. Conservation officers are working to find a safe place for a new camp so firefighters can resume battling the wildfire, officials said. Officials did not provide details on the bear...
  • Why is the a fence screen around Maui fire?

    08/28/2023 7:55:22 PM PDT · by rey · 26 replies
The reason there’s a screen around burned areas in Lahaina? It’s the law. https://health.hawaii.gov/cab/files/2015/09/Hawaii-Fugitive-Dust-Fact-Sheet-Oct-2014-.pdf They are supposed to do as much as they can to prevent drift. A friend just came back from there and said many are restricted from access because of extremely high levels of asbestos. The homes were built during an era when asbestos was a popular element in building materials and is the primary reason there’s so much. He also said, all the work he saw, everyone was wearing full respirators and they were being checked for proper fit. The service dogs that are being used...

  • If Microsoft made the F18

Decades ago, someone had done a satirical piece I’m trying to find on, what if MicroSoft had built the F18? It had things about how you would have to shutdown and restart the plane a couple of times a day and you wouldn’t question that and if you attempted to deploy the ejection seat you would get a message reading, “Are you sure you want to deploy ejection seat?” Stuff like that. Can anyone supply a link to this satirical piece or supply the list? Thanks.

Betsy Bueno got the call from a neighbor on July 10. “It’s really bad with the dog and the horse, Betsy,” her acquaintance said. “Can you please go check?” So Bueno drove roughly a half-mile north of her home, to a field abutting Petaluma Hill Road in unincorporated Sonoma County, to a scene she had visited many times in the preceding months. This time it was much worse. A large German shepherd had taken a brown and white horse (known as a paint) to the ground, and was viciously attacking it. The exhausted horse thrashed and shrieked, but was unable...

Knievel reportedly died on Friday morning (January 13), with his daughters by his side. Following in his father's footsteps as a thrillseeking performer, Robbie rode his first bike when he was just four years old, and went on to perform at his father's Madison Square Garden show when he was just eight. I am having a difficult time understanding the case that was adjudicated today. The press doesn’t really say anything. What are the crimes the company was charged with? Tax fraud is awful broad. What are the specific charges? Is this a New York tax code case? If it is federal, why is it in a New York Court and not a federal? I’ve never heard of a tax case being decided by a jury. I thought tax court had a trial judge. If this is really about taxes, whether state or federal, how can a jury review anything that complicated...
