Buoyed by his strong debate performance in Myrtle Beach, Newt Gingrich has called his rivals to drop out of the race because "consolidating into a Gingrich candidacy" would "virtually guarantee victory" in the South Carolina primary and stop Mitt Romney becoming the Republican nominee. Making the case to a crowd of almost 200 in an art gallery in the old railroad junction town of Florence, South Carolina he said: "If you look at the polling, I’m the only conservative who realistically has a chance to be the nominee.

Question at town hall: "What I've been looking for in my candidate is fire in the belly. We’ve got to bloody Obama’s nose. You've mentioned challenging him to seven, three-hour debates. He has this armor of media surrounding him. If he doesn’t agree to that, how do you plan to aggressively take the gloves off and go after him?" Newt Gingrich: "Let me say first of all, I don’t want to argue with you about the analogy. I don't want to bloody his nose, I want to knock him out."

"In short, the electoral experience of the last 50 years does nothing to undermine the common-sense notion that most political battles are won by seizing and holding the ideological center. In the last two presidential elections, more than 44% of voters described themselves as "moderate," and no conservative candidate could possibly prevail without coming close to winning half of them (as George W. Bush did in his re-election). The notion that ideologically pure conservative candidates can win by disregarding centrists and magically producing previously undiscovered legions of true-believer voters remains a fantasy. Our strategy is working.. all the MSM polls have Kerry at 80% or higher! Let the rats keep voting and the polls will get to such a number where they are taken down because they're ridiculous

I've devoted myself to the wretched task of watching only CNN and MSNBC from now until the election to keep myself in "fight mode." Even though we had an awesome convention, this is no time to get comfortable, and I thought having to see Chris Matthews each night would keep me extremely agitated about W's chances for reelection, which is a good thing.
