HOUSTON -- A Houston-area high school football standout who had orally committed to play at the University of Oklahoma next year was shot to death at an apartment complex in Harris County on Friday. Police arrested a 19-year-old Louisiana man and charged him with murder. Herman Mitchell, 17, died at Ben Taub General Hospital of multiple wounds, said Lt. John Martin of the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The 6-0, 200-pound senior linebacker for Westfield High School had accepted a scholarship offer to play for Oklahoma.

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has rated almost 200,000 bridges, or one of every three bridges in the U.S., as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. Furthermore, more than one-fourth of all bridges are over 50 years old, the average design-life of a bridge. The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) of the U.S. National Research Council recently estimated that the cost of damage to America's bridges currently stands at about $20 billion and is increasing at the rate of $500 million per year. SHRP concluded that the structural deterioration found in these bridges is primarily the result of corrosion.

Israel will not stand idly by and allow Fatah to slaughter Hamas members in the West Bank like Hamas did to Fatah last week in the Gaza Strip, a high-ranking defense official said Saturday. According to the official, Fatah was in the process of taking over Hamas installations and buildings throughout the West Bank in retaliation to Hamas's violent takeover last week of the Gaza Strip. In the meantime, the IDF said that the situation in the West Bank was relatively calm.

American officials have agreed to turn a blind eye to the PKK presence in the northern Iraqi Kurdish Kandil Mountains provided the Kurdish militants stir up trouble inside neighboring Iran. This is behind the American reluctance to move to "finish off" the PKK in Iraq. Serenity: The Conservative Spaceship? I watch the sci-fi movie Serenity today and I would have to say that the underlining theme of the movie was very conservative (or at least libertarian).
