A former IRS contractor who leaked a slew of confidential tax records filed by the wealthiest Americans, including those of President Donald Trump, was sentenced Monday to the maximum of five years in prison. Charles Littlejohn pleaded guilty last year to one count of unauthorized disclosure of income tax returns. Littlejohn, 38, admitted that he leaked Trump’s confidential tax information to the New York Times in 2019 and then replicated his work the next year, filtering the tax returns and financial data of thousands of wealthy Americans to ProPublica.

An Internal Revenue Service (IRS) job posting shows the tax collection agency is hiring armed agents to work in states across the country. The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bill expanding background checks on individuals who are seeking to purchase or transfer firearms as top Democrats have vowed to reintroduce gun control measures. “This bill is a critical step toward preventing gun violence and saving lives,” said Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), who sponsored the measure known as H.R. 8 as Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) introduced the companion bill in the upper chamber. Two people involved with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign tested positive for COVID-19 late Wednesday, the campaign announced on Thursday. As a result, vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) canceled her travel schedule through Oct. 18. One of those who tested positive was identified as a non-staff flight crew member, while the other is Liz Allen, the communications director for Harris. “[Harris] will keep a robust and aggressive schedule of virtual campaign activities to reach voters all across the country during this time. Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, who made waves as a witness during the Trump impeachment proceedings, was fired Friday by the National Security Council and escorted off of the White House grounds, Fox News has confirmed. House conservatives revived a long-shot effort Tuesday to oust IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, formally introducing an impeachment resolution expected to see a vote by the end of the week. Rep. Cyberattacks on taxpayer accounts affected more people than previously reported, the Internal Revenue Service said Friday.
