Former Washington State coach Nick Rolovich is finally speaking out about his reasoning for not getting the COVID-19 vaccine in 2021 and the "ugly conversations" he says occurred with school administrators that led up to his firing. Rolovich, in his first public comments since his firing, told Allison Williams, the host of The Daily Wire's Breakaways, in an interview published on Friday that "lack of answers, lack of dialogue" about the effects of the vaccine, as well as his beliefs as a Catholic, led him to not comply with Gov. Jay Inslee's mandate for Washington state employees. Washington State fired...

“Why haven’t we been told this information?” A coach at a clinic asked me this near the end of a presentation I gave about my eating disorder, where I told my recovery story and offered strategies for what coaches can do to support their athletes. Disordered eating stories amongst runners seem to have been shared mostly through murmurs between coaches and private conversations between athletes who were feeling alone and struggling in silence. As a cross-country coach for Grandville High School in Michigan—four years assistant, two years head coach—I’ve noticed that eating disorders in sport is not a regular or...

On the eve of his 20th appearance at the Women's Final Four, UConn's Geno Auriemma said many coaches have become "afraid" of upsetting players because they might transfer and/or report the coach for verbal abuse. "The majority of coaches in America are afraid of their players," Auriemma said. "The NCAA, the athletic directors and society has made them afraid of their players. Every article you read: 'This guy's a bully. This woman's a bully. This guy went over the line. This woman was inappropriate.'

NEW YORK – It has been five months since the FBI arrested 10 men in a sweeping federal probe into the underbelly of the basketball world. As the three ongoing criminal cases resulting from the investigation plod along, it’s increasingly unlikely there will be another wave of double-digit arrests. More legal charges still could come, but what’s becoming increasingly clear as the discovery portion of the case comes to a close is that the breadth of potential NCAA rules violations uncovered is wide enough to fundamentally and indelibly alter the sport of college basketball. The soundtrack to the three federal...

Yeah, the results were overwhelming. And what's interesting is that the easy win for Hillary Clinton doesn't seem to be much about her at all. Put another way, she didn't win here because these coaches love her or are inspired by her. She won here because, well, because the main person running against her seems unfit and unqualified to be President of the United States. That's the opinion of college basketball coaches, at least.

There's no question that Auburn, Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Texas are seven of college football's heavyweights. Collectively, they've combined to win 26 national championships, and 21 of their players have hoisted the Heisman Trophy. Together, they're also known for a more dubious number: $51.35 million. That's how much money the aforementioned FBS programs have paid their former coaches to buy out the remainder of their contracts, and each of them will carry dead money into the coming season. Buyout information for former USC coach Lane Kiffin is unknown because USC is a private school and is not...

While football teams in the Pac-12 and the Big 12 play nine conference games each season and the Big Ten is about to follow suit, the Southeastern Conference recently announced it will stick with eight conference games. Stanford coach David Shaw is not happy about that, especially now that there will be a four-team playoff beginning next season that will depend on a level playing field for each conference. He said he was “more disappointed than surprised” by the SEC decision. “It’s bigger, I think, than most people understand.”

More charges possible in alleged Antigo marijuana ring Antigo - It was a routine tip as far as drug investigations go. Last summer a Milwaukee drug dealer told authorities he had sold marijuana to someone who was reselling it in Langlade County. As sheriff's detectives in this community of 8,000 began to investigate, they were shocked to see where the trail of marijuana led - to teachers and coaches in the Antigo and Merrill school districts. "This was a surprise to everyone, including us, especially with all of the names involved," said Langlade County Sheriff Bill Greening. "A lot of...

The soldiers expressed their gratitude over and over to the NFL coaches who made the trip to Iraq. "They kept thanking us," said the Tennessee Titans' Jeff Fisher. "We kept thanking them." Fisher, the New York Giants' Tom Coughlin, the Baltimore Ravens' John Harbaugh, former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden are taking part in the first NFL-USO coaches tour over the Fourth of July weekend. A world they knew only through the distant glimpses of news reports turned very real for the coaches as they met with hundreds of soldiers in three...

Boundaries crossed in coach-student relationships By Doug Schneider Press & Sun-Bulletin StoryChat Post CommentStoryChat A coach is entrusted by parents with teaching children the physical, social and moral values inherent in high school athletics. A student-athlete, often near the cusp of adulthood, depends on that adult for the teaching, guidance and discipline associated with pursuing a common goal. Usually, the scenario plays out without significant issues: The coach acts as role-model, sounding board and sometimes fill-in parent; the student learns, grows, and often leaves the program a better person than he or she was before entering into the relationship. But...

Watching the NFL playoff games, I heard the announcer discussing the possibility of the first black coach going to the Super Bowl. A black coach has never made it to the Super Bowl. Really? I was surprised. Surely someone had done that, I thought, but no, no one had. Race will always matter whether we want it to or not. Milestones like this will be noticed less and less, though, as we become a more accepting place for people of all colors. I asked NewsOK users if it is significant that two black coaches - Lovie Smith of the Bears...

It was insulting when much was written about how no NFL black head coach had ever made it to the Super Bowl. But couldn't it be considered equally insulting there has been much ado now that two black coaches have done so? Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy and Chicago coach Lovie Smith, both black, will square off in Super Bowl XLI on Feb. 4 in Miami. Big deal, or no big deal? It's a big deal for any coach to make it to the Super Bowl, no matter what their color. For this achievement, Dungy and Smith warrant high praise, and...

Gophers wrestling coach J Robinson has said things about race and diversity that many consider offensive, but he still has the support of the university — and of his athletes. J Robinson has built the University of Minnesota wrestling program into a national power. That point cannot be argued. But Robinson's remarks critical of diversity and affirmative action can certainly be debated, especially because they come from a high-profile representative of a public university that strives to attract a multicultural student body. In an interview with the Pioneer Press midway through the wrestling season, for a story intended for an...

PITTSBURGH - A T-ball coach allegedly paid one of his players $25 to hurt an 8-year-old mentally disabled teammate so he wouldn't have to put the boy in the game, police said Friday. Mark R. Downs Jr., 27, of Dunbar, is accused of offering one of his players the money to hit the boy in the head with a baseball, police said. Witnesses told police Downs didn't want the boy to play in the game because of his disability. Police said the boy was hit in the head and in the groin with a baseball just before a game, and...

HARTFORD, Conn - University of Connecticut coaches are to be treated the same as other state employees concerning rules on gifts and outside work. The ruling by the state's ethics commission Monday ends a policy that allowed "celebrity" state employees to bypass rules governing the conduct of Connecticut state employees. The decision will allow the coaches to keep previously approved endorsement deals but subjects future contracts to stricter review. The commission spent three months reviewing its treatment of "celebrity" employees at the request of Gov. M. Jodi Rell. The review followed reports that UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun and women's...

Grand jury to review Merkel abuse charges MERKEL - A state probe of relationships between Merkel students and teachers paints a picture that suggests boundaries between coaches and students vanished years ago. The six-month investigation by the state department of Child Protective Services, which investigates allegations of child abuse and neglect, is believed to be a first for the school district. The Taylor County Sheriff's Office assisted CPS with the investigation, which was prompted by a teacher's complaint in August. No arrests have been made in the investigation, although District Attorney James Eidson is expected to present the findings of...
