US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel on Saturday called the Egyptian army chief, Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, to express “US concerns” about the state of democracy in Egypt. “Secretary Hagel noted that the Egyptian government’s response to free expression will demonstrate the interim government’s commitment to a non-violent, inclusive and sustainable democratic transition,” Assistant Press Secretary Carl Woog said in a statement.

My daughter just watched it. She told me it about our founding documents and she said that the movie basically says it is not illegal to stage a revolution to overthrow our corrupt government. I'd like to hear what fellow freeper's think about this topic. I am not advocating the overthrow of our governement, only a discussion about the topic. And has anyone else seen the movie? I will be going this weekend to a movie near me.

To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes. The federal government for years has claimed expansive powers under the authority to regulate commerce – so much that the most innocent private activity can now come under federal control simply because it might have an influence on “interstate commerce.” But did the States really empower Congress through the US Constitution with such an expansive, seemingly unlimited power under the Commerce Clause? There are two fundamental principles to understand when considering Congress’ power under the Commerce Clause. The first consideration is the fact...
  • Peaceful Transition in Cuba using an old Jewish parable

This is the first time I have posted in 2 years. I believe there can be a relatively peaceful transition in Cuba by taking lessons from an old Jewish parable said by Rabbi Nachman of Breslov about 350 years ago. The name of the parable is The Turkey Prince, and I reccomend that y'all read it at www.nachalnovea.com/breslovcenter/articles/article_tprince.html . My comments are thus: I believe there will be at least 3 stages of transition of Cuba to Free Cuba. 1) The Chinese model will first be used, with economic liberalization and some loosening of social controls, but with raul fully...
  • Getting to 'yes' in Europe

BEWARE OF first impressions, especially when it comes to European political debate. Yes, the French and Dutch public have dealt a mighty blow to the prospect of a binding constitution for all of Europe, casting doubt on the future of the European Dream. But the French and Dutch vote on the constitution was complicated, as is usually the case with European politics. Clearly, the far right was successful in mobilizing the anti-immigrant and nationalist sentiment by arguing that a united Europe would mean opening up the floodgates to cheap foreign labor and encourage an unwelcome onslaught of Muslim immigrants. • Proposals for Reform of the Judiciary

Reform of the judiciary (the need if which is increasingly evident) should begin with resolution of contradictory principles of constitutional law. The concept of a "living constitution" is inherently at odds with the concept of stare decisis. ("the thing is decided"). It violates common sense that the provisions of the constituion evolve but interpretation of them does not. Why should the founder's original intent be any more subject to revision than the latest 5-4 opinion as to what that intent was? Law should come with 20 year limits. A case should have no precedential value after 20 years. (So more...
