The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the 109 year old civil rights organization, will not renew the contract of its president, Cornell Brooks, and will "recast" its mission by conducting "a systemwide and strategic revisioning process that will ensure that the NAACP can address these 21st century challenges." Reading between the lines isn't difficult; the NAACP will become more like Black Lives Matter and less like a mainstream organization dedicated to advancing the economic interests of blacks. On Saturday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and actor Danny Glover will join the March on Mississippi in order to protest a pattern of civil rights abuses against the company's predominantly African American workers. Also joining the march are Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), NAACP President Cornell William Brooks, Sierra Club President Aaron Mair, hundreds of workers, civil rights leaders and social justice advocates. The march will end at Nissan's Canton factory, and the marchers will demand that the company start respecting its workers’ right to vote for a union free from fear and intimidation.

The cofounders of the popular Ben and Jerry’s ice cream company were arrested Monday afternoon as part of a sit-in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol protesting big money in politics. Jerry Greenfield, 66, and Ben Cohen, 65, were arrested with about 300 others for “unlawful demonstration activities,” according to a statement from U.S. Capitol Police Monday. All demonstrators were processed and released the same day.

A Chicago activist turned down an invitation to meet with President Barack Obama on Thursday prior to the annual White House Black History Month reception. Aislinn Pulley, who co-founded Black Lives Matter: Chicago, was among about 20 people invited to what the White House billed as an intergenerational meeting of black leaders to discuss criminal justice reform throughout the U.S., according to a White House official. The head of the NAACP went on national TV Wednesday, comparing public officials in Ferguson, Mo., to “roaches.” Not long after, the strife-torn city saw another round of protests that left two police officers shot and hospitalized in serious condition.
