    An assistant professor at the State University of New York in Cortland has been arrested in central New York on rape and sexual abuse charges. Daniel DePerno of Cortland is accused of victimizing a teenage girl on several occasions since she was 13. The 39-year-old DePerno was arrested Thursday on charges of second-degree and third-degree rape, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child after a joint investigation by state troopers and SUNY Cortland police. He was arraigned in the town of Cortlandville and ordered held on $250,000 cash bail. A call to his lawyer wasn't immediately returned Friday....

    The Fabius-Pompey Central School District is closing Thursday and Friday as a precaution after a female high school student who recently traveled to Mexico tested positive for swine flu. The student lives in Cortland County and is one of three possible human swine flu cases reported earlier this week by the Cortland Health Department. The state Health Department announced Wednesday preliminary tests showed the high school student has the illness. Final confirmation is expected from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today .
