Ever since Bill and Hillary Clinton stepped onto the national stage, I have been struck by their lust for power. When Bill became embroiled in his first sex scandal during the race for the White House in 1992, one would have thought his presidential career was over before it had begun. Then, the country witnessed his wife on national television saying that people were telling lies about her husband. "I'm not some woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette," she said, trying to save the philanderer whom she viewed as her key to political prominence. If she had told...

The trial of 18 men accused of dressing up as women has started in a Sharia court in northern Nigeria. The men were arrested last year in a hotel room in the city of Bauchi. Prosecutors read out a letter from New York based Human Rights Watch calling for the court to respect the men's right to "free association". The men were originally accused of sodomy, which could lead to the death penalty under Sharia, but the charges were reduced. Prosecutor Yusuf Adamu said HRW was "grossly misinformed" about the case and invited a representative of the organisation to attend...

Afghan soldiers have captured a Taliban leader who tried to flee a security operation in the south dressed in a burqa, NATO said on Wednesday. Tuesday's capture in Kandahar province came as NATO launched a major offensive in neighbouring Helmand to secure a key hydroelectric dam and combat the opium trade. The man was named as Mullah Mahmood and described as an expert bomb-maker. U.S.-led coalition forces also detained five more suspected militants in eastern Khost this week. Fighting is expected to be heavy in 2007 after the bloodiest year since the Taliban's ouster in 2001. The Taliban warn they...

New York OKs crossdressers to use facilities of their choice. If you happen to be passing through Grand Central Station and nature calls, you just might want to hold it until you get home, because, this week, officials with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority decided that transgendered people have the right to use the bathroom – men's or women's – of their choice on New York's subway system. Helena Stone: "I'm a 24-hour woman." The agreement was reached following a lawsuit filed by Helena Stone – formerly known as Henry McGuinness – who was arrested twice in 2005 and once earlier...

After years of stifling conservatism, men face a dizzying array of clothing options ranging from cutting-edge sportswear to unisex collections that blur the distinctions between the genders. French designer Jean Paul Gaultier is largely to thank for these advances. He was the first to show men in skirts and continues to promote an androgynous approach to dressing with his Gaultier To The Power of Two collection, inspired by the perfume of the same name. Male and female models swaggered out in platform heels in his spring-summer 2007 show Saturday, which drew inspiration from 1970s glam rockers such as David Bowie....

Becoming U.S. Senate minority leader has hurt Sen. Harry Reid's popularity back home, according to a Review-Journal poll. Since he was re-elected in 2004 and took the party post, the percentage of Nevadans who view Reid favorably has dropped by 10 percentage points, while the number who view him unfavorably has increased 14 percentage points. Analysts say it's obvious Reid's new status, which requires him to spout the Democratic party line aggressively and also take the brunt of Republican attacks, has turned off home state voters who saw him as independent. Some are surprised at the magnitude of the shift....

October 11, 2005 -- The company seemed a little confused as to its dressing room policy. A staffer at its Web site responded to Vera: "Victoria's Secret does allow men to use dressing rooms. However, because our primary target client is female and because of the sensitive nature of our product, there are specific guidelines for males in the dressing room areas. "If a male client requests a dressing room at a busy time . . . or there are female clients in the area, we ask him to come back . . . when the shop is less busy....

March 31, 2005 -- A Queens landlord didn't cross-dress the line by ordering that men who dress as women not use the ladies' room, an appeals court ruled. The state Appellate Division made the finding in a ruling made public yesterday, where it dismissed a sex and gender discrimination suit filed by an AIDS awareness group against its Jackson Heights landlord. The Hispanic AIDS Forum said it was discriminated against after the landlord of its 37th Avenue offices backed out of a deal extending their lease "due to various complaints regarding the use of the bathrooms by its transgender clientele,"...

In an incident the YMCA is calling "a very regrettable scheduling error," kids arriving for an early-morning swim meet Sunday walked into a gender-bending scene of the kind most of them wouldn't be allowed to watch on TV. Several of the kids' angry parents clashed with participants in a transgender fashion show, which had been under way at the New City YMCA since about midnight, resulting in a chaotic melee that was eventually broken up by private security guards and East Chicago District police.
