t is, perhaps, a peculiar fact involving an obscure medical text, but it is one that is now taking on outsized importance: The World Health Organization, in a compendium of conditions and diseases, lists being transgender under the umbrella of mental illness. The WHO publishes a standardized coding system used around the globe to classify medical conditions, for research purposes and health-care billing. In the document, being transgender is currently included in a section with kleptomania (the overwhelming impulse to steal), trichotillomania (the compulsion to pull out one’s own hair), and pedophilia (a preference for having sex with children).

People with the condition are known to have any of a number of delusions that range from believing they have no organs, blood or body parts to insisting they are actually dead even though they are very much still breathing. In even more rare cases of what is also known as walking corpse syndrome, people with the condition consider themselves immortal. Although walking corpse syndrome is considered extremely rare, its exact prevalence is unknown. The number of men suffering from mental disorder is almost double compared to women in the country. California would ban anorexic models under a bill introduced Monday in the state Legislature. Assemblyman Marc Levine, D-San Rafael, said AB2539 is an effort to reduce the number of eating disorders among models by creating industry health standards and requiring modeling agencies to be licensed by the California Labor Commissioner. Under the legislation, models would need a physician’s certificate attesting that they don’t suffer from an eating disorder, which agencies would be required to keep on file or face a fine.
