A teacher fired over her concern for a student’s welfare is not going down without a fight. Bonnie Manchester, whom MassResistance reported is a Christian, was sacked from a middle school in Ludlow, Massachusetts, back in 2021 after informing a female student’s father that the school was secretly referring to his daughter as a boy. Two years on, Manchester is filing a $10 million lawsuit against Ludlow, its school board, current and former school district superintendents, and several former school employees.

The Democratic governor of Wisconsin has vetoed a bill that sought to outlaw gender transition treatments for minors. The veto from Gov. Tony Evers was expected, according to The Associated Press, as he previously vowed to strike down any proposals from the Republican-controlled Wisconsin legislature that he deems harmful to LGBTQ+ youth. The bill was passed by the state legislature in October. It would have banned gender transition surgeries, as well as all forms of transition treatment for minors in the Badger State, which includes puberty blockers and hormone treatment using estrogen and testosterone.

<p>As experienced professionals involved in direct care for the rapidly growing numbers of gender-diverse youth, the evaluation of medical evidence or both, we were surprised by the Endocrine Society’s claims about the state of evidence for gender-affirming care for youth (Letters, July 5). Stephen Hammes, president of the Endocrine Society, writes, “More than 2,000 studies published since 1975 form a clear picture: Gender-affirming care improves the well-being of transgender and gender-diverse people and reduces the risk of suicide.” This claim is not supported by the best available evidence.</p>

A recent New York Times article attempted to downplay the importance of “detransitioners,” or individuals who once identified as the opposite sex but now have stopped trying to portray themselves that way. Aurora Regino is speaking out against the Chico Unified School District’s “parental secrecy policy,” which allows school officials to provide gender counseling to students without informing parents. Regino’s 11-year-old daughter’s elementary school reportedly assisted her in transitioning from female to male during the last school year, but a guidance counselor kept Regino in the dark throughout the entire process. A Pennsylvania school district will keep parents in the dark when it invites children to declare a “gender” that is different from their sex. Greater Johnstown School District in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, created a “gender transition plan” and a “gender support plan” for students. Neither plan requires consent or involvement from parents. California announced last week that it has added Iowa to the list of states on its ever-expanding “travel ban” list because of that state’s new prohibition against funding gender-transition surgeries under Medicaid. The Department of Veterans Affairs has dropped plans to start covering gender transition surgery for veterans amid concerns about costs.
