LOS ANGELES - Leaders of the notorious Mexican Mafia were charged Wednesday with running a conspiracy to control drug trafficking and carry out violence ordered from inside Los Angeles County jails. The U.S. attorney's office charged 83 people tied to racketeering conspiracies that alleged they ran drugs and carried out violent assaults and even murders. "These cases have delivered a major blow to the Mexican Mafia and leaders of many of the street gangs under the control of the organization," U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna said. "By taking out the gang members who control the jails, and by disrupting their communications...

Caleb Hanna was a child when Barack Obama won the White House and, like many African Americans, he recalled his excitement at seeing “someone who looks like me become president.” But Mr. Hanna, now 19, soured on Mr. Obama’s policies. This month, he was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates as a Republican, becoming one of the party’s youngest black legislators in the country. Mr. Hanna grew up not only in a state that is overwhelmingly white, but in a white family. He was adopted as a child, and his father, mother, four sisters and brother, who are...

Assemblywomen Claudia Tenney, businessman Steven Wells, and history teacher George Phillips all hoping to earn the Republican nomination, and represent the 22nd Congressional District. In the end, it was Tenney who got the majority of the votes, but it was a victory several months in the making, and it wasn't always pretty. "I know this has been a tough presidential year, but this campaign was really brutal on a lot of voters,” Tenney said.

Several Republican lawmakers have expressed doubt as to whether they will cast a ballot for Donald Trump in November, but House Rep. Richard Hanna (R-NY) is the first to say he will be voting for Hillary Clinton instead. Hanna, a member of the LGBT Equality Caucus, has a history of supporting gay marriage, opposing cuts to Planned Parenthood, and encouraging women to donate to Democrats. In other words, he’s a liberal in Republican clothing. Still, his denouncement of Trump is likely to give the mainstream media plenty to crow about over the next couple of days. Hanna came out for...

The head of the House Select Committee on Benghazi blasted a fellow Republican lawmaker for claiming the panel's investigation is a politically motivated attack on Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton. U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., rebuked fellow Republican Rep. Richard Hanna, of New York, who said the panel's investigation is "designed to go after" former Secretary of State Clinton. Gowdy said Hanna has "never asked for a briefing by the committee staff" and knows little about the work being done.

The House on Friday voted along party lines to freeze federal funding for Planned Parenthood after weeks of escalating tension surrounding its use of fetal tissue. In a 241-187 vote, nearly all Republicans and two Democrats approved legislation that would block Planned Parenthood's federal funding for one year, giving time for Congress to fully investigate claims of wrongdoing by the provider. Lawmakers also passed a bill tightening restrictions on abortion doctors who violate infant protections in a 248-177 vote. “What we’ve learned about Planned Parenthood is appalling, barbaric and indefensible,” Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-Pa.) said. Three Republicans broke ranks to...

With barely five days to go before New York's June 24 primary, speculation is mounting as to whether Rep. Richard Hanna is going to the next Republican U.S. House member after Virginia's Eric Cantor to lose renomination. While House Majority Leader Cantor's loss was fueled largely by his support on immigration reform and extending the debt ceiling — both issues that angered tea party Republicans — two-termer Hanna has many more positions hostile to conservatives. More significantly, Cantor was defeated by an obscure college educator, David Brat, while Hanna, 63, faces a well-known conservative figure in State Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney.

Carl Paladino, the conservative businessman who pulled off an upset to win the Republican primary in the 2010 New York's governor's race, is counting on Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney to pull off a similar upset in the state's 22nd Congressional District. Paladino said today he will back Tenney, R-New Hartford, in her GOP primary campaign against U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna, R-Barneveld, the two-term Republican who faces his second consecutive challenge from his party's conservative base.

A Republican congressman disenchanted with his party's stance on women's issues urged attendees at a rally to give money to Democrats to send a message to the GOP. "I think these are very precarious times for women, it seems. So many of your rights are under assault," Rep. Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.) told a crowd at a rally in Washington, D.C., for the Equal Rights Amendment, according to the Huffington Post. "I'll tell you this: Contribute your money to people who speak out on your behalf, because the other side — my side — has a lot of it. And you...

As the campaign season entered its final weeks, the area’s two incumbent congressmen were outspending their Republican challengers by wide margins. Of course, they had more to spend — a lot more. For the quarter ending Sept. 30, Rep. Dan Maffei, D-25 of Syracuse, took in $366,805 in net contributions. Challenger Ann Marie Buerkle took in less than half of that: $147,888. In the 24th District, incumbent Democrat Mike Arcuri of Utica outraised challenger Richard Hanna by a smaller margin, $256,291 to $138,527.... 24th District While Hanna had the fundraising edge early in the campaign, Arcuri quickly regained it, and...

Republican Congressional candidate Richard Hanna has raised more than $350,000 in the last eight weeks, his campaign said Saturday. Hanna, who is challenging incumbent Democrat Michael Arcuri in the 24th district, said in a press release that he was “humbled and grateful for the enormous support.” His campaign said 91 percent of the individual donations came from within the district, which includes the city of Geneva and parts of Ontario and Seneca counties. Complete first-quarter financials must be filed with the Federal Election Commission by Thursday, and Hanna’s campaign said specific figures would be available then. Arcuri spokesman Mark Cornell...

The New York State Independence Party Vice Chairman John Dote slammed Congressman Michael Arcuri and his campaign spokesperson, Jordan Karp's claims in a local newspaper of being "independent." "We feel strongly about an independent voice for the people. Mr. Arcuri has proven over the past two years that politics are more important to him than truly representing the voters of this district. The fact that he attaches his name to the word "independent," is truly misleading and frankly insulting to our party and the voters who he fooled once already. We state below some facts we considered, which ultimately led...
