SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A state lawmaker has introduced a universal basic income bill that would give every Californian $1,000 per month. AB 2712 was introduced by Assemblyman Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley) on Thursday. The bill would create a California Universal Basic Income Program (CalUBI) where residents over 18-years-old would receive $1,000 per month. As written, the bill would only exempt people who are already getting Medi-Cal, County Medical Services Program, CalFresh, CalWorks or Unemployment Insurance from getting the universal basic income. Low’s bill would pay for the CalUBI program with a 10 percent value-added tax on goods and services in...

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) signaled that she is open to a universal basic income – an idea that has been championed by fellow presidential contender Andrew Yang (D). Warren expressed her willingness to consider a UBI, which quite literally amounts to the government handing individuals and families a “basic” income per month regardless of employment or income status, in a Washington Post survey that asked, “Should the federal government pay a universal basic income to every American adult?

Ben & Jerry’s co-founders announced a limited edition ice cream on Friday in support of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and his presidential bid. Ben Cohen, a co-founder of the Vermont-based ice cream giant, announced the new political flavor in a tweet Friday morning. He said Sanders is “the best candidate to beat Trump and drive the transformational change that we need to create a country that works for working families”:

Andrew Yang’s (D) aggressive pitch to offer a universal basic income of $1,000 monthly to U.S. adults has been attempted numerous times on a small scale, but the experiments have not necessarily produced the desired results. The Washington Post details an experiment implemented by a nonprofit, which aimed to give “20 African American single mothers living in public housing $1,000 each month for a year” with no strings attached. The experiment began last November, and the women began receiving checks the following month. According to the Post, most of the women – 15 total – were working at the time....

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) took aim at fellow presidential candidate Andrew Yang’s (D) proposal for universal basic income, telling Hill.TV that a federal jobs guarantee is preferable because “people want to work.” Yang – who saw a spike in Emerson Polling’s recent survey (4 percent support) and qualified for September’s Democrat presidential debate – has touted his universal basic income plan, promising to give U.S. citizens $1,000 a month. “Americans will work even harder when they get the resources in place to actually get ahead. This is the trickle up economy from our people, families and communities up,” Yang told...

Free money. Sounds great, right? However just as it is as devious when you see the offer in a misspelled spam email from a supposed foreign price or elderly estate-owner so is it with public policy.Universal Basic Income (UBI) is the idea of giving out to every American a set amount of money every so often with little to no strings attached. It is meant to address the transformational economic changes that have come about as a result of technological advancements and automation across nearly every industry and which are expected to only continue. While an old idea, and with various theorists...

Getting a paycheck for doing nothing could be in the future for residents of New Jersey’s largest city. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka says the city is going to study a pilot program to provide a universal basic income, or basically guaranteeing income for all residents whether they have a job. […] The city has launched a taskforce to see if the program is feasible with help from the Economic Security Project and the Jain Institute. […] There has not been a successful long-term Universal Basic Income program. A small basic-income program that was tested in Finland was ended after one...

Finland’s Social Insurance Institution just released results from a two-year experiment with Universal Basic Income. The plan was simple. Instead of only giving unemployment benefits to people who are out of work, Finland would randomly select 2,000 people who would receive a monthly payment whether or not they worked. This guaranteed income was supposed to encourage people receiving it to take more jobs or even start new businesses. But that’s not what happened. From the official press release: ‘On the basis of an analysis of register data on an annual level, we can say that during the first year...

Earlier this year we learned that Michael Tubbs, the new mayor of Stockton, California, was moving ahead with a few test programs involving a guaranteed basic income for some residents of his city. A couple of these proposals involved paying residents not to commit violent crimes, but a separate plan simply involved having a limited number of citizens signing up to get a monthly check, no questions asked. That project is now being rolled out, but there’s a curious phenomenon taking shape in Stockton. For some reason, people don’t seem terribly anxious to sign up for free money. (CBS Sacramento)...

Chicago Officials Looking at Universal Basic Income Program Cole Lauterbach - Watchdog.org 3 minutes BY: August 11, 2018 4:58 am Officials in Chicago want to test the waters of offering a universal basic income. A majority of city council members are telling Mayor Rahm Emanuel to form a task force to look into Universal Basic Income programs, which is essentially a periodic check from the government with no strings attached. The City Council wants to explore a program that would send at least $500 a month to 1,000 Chicago families. The same families also would get Earned Income Tax Credit...

Chicago may soon become the largest municipality in the U.S. to test a universal basic income program. Chicago alderman Ameya Pawar recently proposed legislation that would provide 1,000 families with a $500 monthly stipend -- no questions asked. The bill already has the backing of the majority of city lawmakers, and Pawar hopes to soon work with Mayor Rahm Emanuel to implement the pilot program, The Intercept reported. “Nearly 70 percent of Americans don’t have $1,000 in the bank for an emergency,” Pawar told the outlet. “UBI could be an incredible benefit for people who are working and are having...

Stockton will give 100 residents $500 a month for 18 months, no strings attached. The nontraditional system for distributing wealth guarantees that citizens receive a regular sum of money. The goal is to create an income floor no one will fall beneath. The concept of Universal Basic...

One solution to income inequality is giving out free cash, according to the British billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson. “A basic income should be introduced in Europe and in America,” Branson told David Gelles of The New York Times. Branson was responding to the question, “What do you think those in positions of power should do to address social problems like income inequality?”

Finland's government has decided not to continue its year-old experiment offering citizens a universal basic income -- or money for nothing -- beyond the two year trial. In January 2017, Finland became the first country in Europe to pay some of its unemployed citizens a basic monthly income, amounting to 560 euros ($587), in the unique social experiment aimed at cutting government red tape, reducing poverty and boosting employment. On Tuesday, it emerged that the government had decided to stop making the payments to the 2,000 randomly picked citizens chosen as subjects in the experiment from January 2019. The government...
