Virginia-based Huntington Ingalls Industries says that over the next five years, its yard at Newport News will need 7,000 new shipbuilders to work on subs and warships for the U.S. Navy, including 2,000 net new positions. CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Construction work is on schedule for the LG Electronic appliance plant to begin production this fall. The $250 million dollar plant, is the South Korean appliance maker’s first washing machine plant in the United States and will employee 600 workers in its first phase. Rolls-Royce North America is adding about 100 jobs at its Prince George County manufacturing plant this year. Employment at the Crosspointe factory should reach 400 or more by the end of the year as it adds production to meet demand in the aircraft industry, said Lorin S. WASHINGTON—The unemployment rate fell to an 18-year low in May and employers steadily added jobs, signs of enduring strength for the labor market. U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose a seasonally adjusted 223,000 in May, the Labor Department said Friday. The unemployment rate ticked down to 3.8%, matching April 2000 as the lowest reading since 1969. Wages in May improved modestly, growing 2.7% from a year earlier. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected 190,000 new jobs and a 3.9% unemployment rate.

Retailers are facing a shipping squeeze, and the trucking industry just can't keep up. According to the American Trucking Associations, there's a shortage of roughly 50,000 truck drivers across the country. And it's hitting both businesses and consumers in the wallet. US employers went on a hiring binge last month, adding 313,000 jobs, the most since July 2016, and drawing hundreds of thousands of people into the job market. The Labor Department says wage gains, meanwhile, fell from the previous month to 2.6 percent year-over-year growth. Strong hourly wage growth had spooked markets in February because it raised the specter of inflation. But January's figure was revised one-tenth of a point lower to 2.8 percent. Whirlpool Corp.’s Amana Operations refrigerator plant is planning what officials there call a hiring blitz over the next three weeks, aiming to add 500 employees.
