Another surprising Quinnipiac poll out this morning puts Republican Bob Beauprez up 10 points over Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper among likely voters, 50 percent to 40 percent. The Democratic incumbent is badly underwater in the Q poll, viewed unfavorably by 51 percent and favorably by 43 percent. Beauprez, a former congressman, is viewed positively by 49 percent and negatively by 31 percent. Beauprez leads by 13 among independents, 50-37. And he’s neck-and-neck with Hickenlooper among women, edging him out 47-46, while carrying men by 20 points, 54-34. No one in the game really believes that Beauprez is ahead by double...

Audio obtained by Complete Colorado has raised significant new issues regarding Governor John Hickenlooper’s stance on the death penalty. In an interview with CNN earlier this year, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper suggested that if he does not win reelection, he could use his executive powers to overhaul Colorado’s death row with clemency. In particular, the Governor suggested these remedies were conditional – if his opponent turned the death penalty, or the Dunlap case in particular, into a “political football.” In the audio, the unidentified CNN interviewer asks, “But it (the death penalty) is an issue. And, you know, some of...

Says he doesn’t want to upset powers in D.C. Gov. John Hickenlooper today told a room full of Western gas and oil executives that he hasn’t taken a position on the proposed Keystone XL pipeline because he hasn’t wanted to “piss off” the powers that be in Washington, D.C. “I’ve avoided taking a position (on the Keystone pipeline) because it’s just going to piss off a lot of people in Washington that I don’t need to piss off, and my opinion is not going to change anybody’s opinion there,” Hickenlooper said ... Hickenlooper’s opponent, former U.S. Rep. Bob Beauprez, criticized...

Believe me, I appreciate the fact that you adhere to my “no simian references” rule when commenting. I especially appreciate the restraint that is required when dealing with situations that some might take to be flagrant “taunting.”  Take yesterday, for example; when BO was hanging with Governor Hickenlooper and just whistling Dixie past all the grave yards: As you can see, creeper managed to rein herself in, adhering to the letter of the law if not the intent. Butt apparently somebody didn’t get the memo:Maybe because he was busy, drinking with the white boy. And please, no racist “Hickenlooper” jokes...
  • Rasmussen poll has Hickenlooper, Beauprez tied at 44 percent (Colorado Governor's Election)

DENVER — After his worst two weeks of press this year, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper is polling at just 44 percent and running neck and neck with his newly-minted Republican challenger Bob Beauprez, who won last week’s four-way GOP gubernatorial primary. The survey of 750 likely voters from Rasmussen Reports out Tuesday was conducted by phone last Wednesday and Thursday, immediately following the Tuesday night primary in which Beauprez finished ahead of Tom Tancredo and two other challengers. Eight percent of respondents in the poll are undecided, while four percent prefer another candidate. Rasmussen is regarded as a conservative polling...
  • Republicans Challenge Regret-Filled Hick to Support Magazine Ban Repeal

DENVER—Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper now says he has regrets about signing last year’s bill limiting magazine capacity to 15 rounds, but it’s not too late for him to do something about it. Republicans challenged Hickenlooper to get behind a repeal of the bill after he told county sheriffs that he was sorry for failing to consult with them on the measure; that a staffer promised he would sign the bill if it passed, and that the bill probably wouldn’t accomplish anything. Secretary of State Scott Gessler called on the governor to convene a special session in order to repeal the...

In an election year, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper used the F-word to the state’s sheriffs after claiming they never bothered to tell him the gun control bills he signed into law were unenforceable and he had no idea the bills would be controversial. During the last legislative session Democrats who controlled both chambers of the legislature as well as the governor’s mansion passed a series of gun control laws that are among the strictest in the nation. Among them are what the state’s sheriffs have said is a ban on the sale of all new magazines in the state. The...

  • Littwin Weekly GOP Gov Rankings: Hick shoots self in the foot; someone fires away at all of Tancredo

It's primary week and finally there’s some news. First, and most critically, we have our first-ever shakeup at the top of the Littwin Weekly GOP Governor’s Race Rankings. As LeBron James so ably put it, history is made to be broken. Second, John Hickenlooper apologized to a meeting of state sheriffs for hurting their feelings on guns, which came out sounding like he was apologizing for passing the gun laws. Worse (for Hick), he told the sheriffs he never talked to then-Mayor Bloomberg when, in fact, he had and, in fact, had said he had and, in fact, of course...

DENVER — No doubt Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper had hoped the uproar over the gun-control legislation he signed last year would have blown over by now, but he’s since learned that’s not the case. The governor set off a fresh round of outrage at a recent forum in Aspen with county sheriffs who sued over the legislation, first by apologizing for failing to meet with them during the debate, and then by insisting he never spoke to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg about the bills. Unfortunately for Hickenlooper, Complete Colorado ran a story after the Friday forum that included...

Rep. Jared Polis’s decision to sponsor a barrelful of anti-fracking initiatives is threatening to make a tough election year even rougher for Colorado Democrats, starting with Sen. Mark Udall. Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper is attempting to broker a deal that would persuade Polis to pull his proposed anti-fracking initiatives, but if the governor can’t get it done, every Democratic candidate will face pressure to take a stand this year on an issue that has badly divided the state party. That starts with the Democrat Udall, who’s already under fire for refusing to stake out a position on whether to construct...

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez snagged the endorsement of high-profile politicians this week, including winning the support of former GOP presidential nominee and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. “As a former governor, I can tell you that Bob Beauprez has exactly what Colorado needs to lead,” Romney wrote in an email sent to Beauprez supporters. “Bob’s unique combination of passion, drive, conservative values and experience will make him an outstanding governor.” Beauprez was the most prominent Romney surrogate in Colorado during the 2012 presidential campaign — the Republican lost the state by about 5 points to President Barack Obama —...

Well, that was fast. Just a few days ago, we reported that liberal Gov. John Hickenlooper told The Yuma Pioneer that he would veto any bill without bipartisan support. Like many Coloradans, we thought that was a step in the right direction. That sentiment lasted less than a week. Last night, Gov. Hickenlooper signed into law the bill that opens the door wide for election fraud – the infamous H.B. 1164. The bill had no bipartisan support. ... Though voters are evenly divided over whether Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper deserves to be re-elected this November, he easily leads several potential Republican challengers, according to a new Quinnipiac poll. Fifty-two percent of Coloradoans approve of the Democrat’s performance as governor, 13 points more than disapprove. However, only 45 percent say he deserves a second term, the same percentage that believes he does not. n hypothetical matchups against a series of Republican opponents, however, Hickenlooper performs well. Voters prefer him over former Rep. Tom Tancredo, 48 percent-39 percent. Hickenlooper leads Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler, 46-40. And he bests...

Gov. John Hickenlooper called Thursday for a focus on bipartisanship in the 2014 legislative session, but Republicans can be forgiven for greeting his proposal with a certain skepticism. The 2013 legislative session, often described as the most liberal in state history, may have also been the most partisan. Democrats pushed through major legislation with no Republican votes on a half-dozen fronts, including election reform, gun control, education funding, and the rural renewable-energy standard. “It would be lovely if he behaved in a bipartisan manner, but that’s not what we saw last year,” said state Sen. Greg Brophy (R-Wray... ... This...
