Rare solar storm to make northern lights visible to most of US: Here’s how to see it

A powerful solar storm will make the northern lights visible to most of America — including the New York City area — Friday night, but you’ll need to get out of the city if you want a chance at seeing the auroras.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has upgraded the looming geomagnetic solar storm to a level 4, which is capable of disrupting America’s electrical grid and making the northern lights visible as far south as Alabama.

The key to witnessing the natural phenomena will depend on the amount of cloud coverage and light population, making upstate New York or Long Island the best bet for city dwellers.

These clowns need to stop scaring people. Everybody was freaking out at work and nothing happened.

I lived in North Dakota for a few years. We could see Northern lights. Mostly green flashes in the sky.

But not the southern lights.

Well, yes, if you happen to be in New Zealand or Tasmania!

Most of the illustrations in the article are absolutely useless. And the NOAA twitter feed is worse.

8:36 Looks like the cell is going to just miss and slip over the bay.

It looks like things may break up a bit shortly thereafter.

Hoo, golly, if we in NA could see the “southern lights”, I’d be getting a bit worried!

A direct CME hit will happen eventually. That will be more than just nice lights in the night sky.

Seems like a good place to drop a question for anyone that might know...

From time to time a strong solar event occurs and in the articles letting everyone know they will say something like “even people viewing from as far south as Britain will be able to see the Aurora.”

I live just under 45th parallel and see them on a rather frequent basis, why would it be unusual for the population of an island that lies between 49 and 59 to see them?

Im starting to think that I missed a detail related to those types of things back in school.

Then again, I was once told by someone at a planetarium in Chicago that certain constellations that I can see quite well from my place are too dim to be seen by the human eye. So is that statement in the articles just a statement by some English reporter that doesnt know better because he never leaves London?
