The press corps has a mild buzz going about a weekend contretemps ginned up, for publicity's sake, by Sarah Palin's camp, in her ongoing campaign to show how badly she is victimized by the media. The odd thing is that she has been victimized by the media, horribly so, and many of us (myself included, in several posts after the Gabby Giffords shooting) have rushed to her defense -- so she doesn't need to gin up controversies out of thin air. But that's exactly what she and her team did this past weekend.

Way too much attention paid to the Hindenburg Omen, that this dreaded technical pattern flashed a negative signal recently in the markets, indicating a coming crash. It was the early evening of May 6, 1937 when the German Hindenburg made its fatal descent into Naval Air Station Lakehurst in New Jersey. Radio broadcaster Herbert Morrison famously wept for the humanity as the airship burst into flames and crashed to the ground. 35 passengers and one member of the ground crew were killed. Sources at the Iranian opposition said that the spiritual leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died. Iannacone, who survived the Hindenburg's airship crash and rescued passengers during the first seconds of its fire, died early Friday afternoon at Kimball Medical Center in Lakehurst after suffering a heart attack on Thanksgiving. He served in the Navy's aircraft carrier fleet and during World War II hunted German U-boats from blimps. "It's a really sad day for Lakehurst. He was an institution. He was the base's biggest support and our link to the past," Lakehurst commander Capt. L. Bret Gordon told the Asbury Park Press in Saturday's editions. "He could regale you with stories for hours. I feel bad that young sailors aren't going to have him around anymore." Iannacone spent 44 years with the Navy as a chief petty officer and civilian worker. In retirement, he remained active with the Navy's Lakehurst Historical Society, where friends described him as a nurturing type. "When all the school kids came out, John would be there to sign their autographs and take pictures with them," said Carl Jablonski, president of the historical society told the Press.
