Ryan Hunter-Reay has captured the 98th Indianapolis 500 in a dramatic finish, holding off a final charge from Helio Castroneves after making a gutsy, outside pass into Turn 1 on the final lap for the lead. Hunter-Reay held off Castroneves by just 0.0600 of a second, the second-closest finish in ’500 history (1992). The win is the first for Andretti Autosport since 2007 (Dario Franchitti) and the team’s third overall.

NDIANAPOLIS – For the 12th time, a Corvette will pace the field for the Indianapolis 500. Race officials revealed Thursday that the 2014 Corvette Stingray will serve as the official pace car for the 97th running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. The seventh-generation car differs from the production models with track-mandated safety features and strobe lights. Chevrolet said the car’s powertrain will be able to pace the field without any upgrades thanks to its new 6.2L LT1 engine.

The Indianapolis 500 celebrates 100 years of competition Sunday. From the first winner, American Ray Harroun in something called a Marmon "Wasp," to the latest, Englishman Dario Franchitti, the Indy 500 has become the most famous race in the world. This year, observers say it boasts the strongest 33-car field it has seen since the CART-Indy split in 1996. It’s a regular stop for the Izod IndyCar Series drivers, but the race also includes former champions and non-IndyCar regulars who are in a ride for one shot at glory at The Brickyard.

After crossing the bricked finish line on Sunday, the winner of the Indianapolis 500 will drive into the winner’s circle, be presented with a celebratory wreath and take a swig from a cold bottle of milk. The latter is one of the grandest traditions in sports, but also one of the most confusing. Why milk? Why is it in a bottle? And (this one was actually asked by a girl I knew in college) has it been sitting in the sun all day? After solving mysteries in Beijing, Boston and Augusta, GA, the old Y! Sports investigative unit is here...

Danica Patrick's new car got a grand introduction on Tuesday. She took it on a short ride through the Chicago streets before officially unveiling the No. 7 Motorola she will drive for Andretti Green Racing next season. ``It's black, it's sort of sleek, it looks fast,'' Patrick said. And it resembles a batmobile. She hopes it performs like one, too. Patrick rode to stardom in 2005 when she finished fourth at the Indianapolis 500 and was the IRL rookie of the year. But this year was difficult. Teammate Paul Dana died after crashing during a warm-up for the season-opener at...

I had the pleasure of attending the Indy 500 today. We have great seats located behind the pits and just shy of the start finish line. Because of our location we are able to see the pre race activities first hand. Of course attending the race are the usual Hollywood celebs. Jack Nicholson, Patrick Dempsey, a couple actors from Lost and Prison break, to name a few. They were introduced twice, once while they were standing around with their celeb peers and once when they were paraded in front of the crowd while riding in the back of convertables. I...

Armstrong to drive Indy 500 pace car Indianapolis, April 4, 2006 -- Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong will pace the field this year at the 90th Indianapolis 500. Armstrong, who was treated for cancer in Indianapolis before becoming a champion cyclist, will drive the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette to start the race on May 28. "All I can say is that when we got the phone call to ask if I was interested in driving the Pace Car at Indy, it was a very short conversation," said Armstrong. "It was like: 'Are you kidding? Of course.' It is a...

Friday, May 23, 2003Crumbling Brickyard-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By Jim Armstrong Special to Page 2 Gentlemen, start your apathy. And since, outside of Hootie Johnson's house, we're all one big, gender-equal, happy family, you can, too, ladies. Ignore the Indy 500, that is. There was a time not so long ago when Indy had more It than the Addams family tree. The Battle at the Brickyard was as ingrained in American culture as rock 'n' roll, backseat makeout sessions at the drive-in and church on Sunday. Memorial Day weekends were reserved for Indy, double-headers, SPF 8, and backyard burgers and brewskis. In the...
