An 11-year-old girl was called a hero by neighbors Wednesday after she used a handgun to shoot a man who was attacking her mother. About 4 a.m. Tuesday, Oklahoma City police were called to a home at 3308 SE 89 and found Brandy Moreno, who said she was stabbed by her ex-boyfriend, Leo Henry. Police said Henry broke into the house and began to attack Moreno until her daughter, Jayda Milsap, 11, shot Henry twice with a handgun. Henry tried to flee from the home after being shot and was found down the street, police said.

MK Hanin Zoabi (United Arab List) argued that the three kidnappers responsible for the abduction of three teenage yeshiva students are "not terrorists" on Radio Tel Aviv Tuesday morning, in an inflammatory interview which also saw her denigrate Arab Zionist and distant relative Mohammed Zoabi. Mohammed Zoabi, 17, courageously made a viral video showing support for the kidnapped boys, a move which garnered him both Israeli commendation and several death threats from within his Nazareth hometown. MK Zoabi initially denied that she knew the brave teenager well during Tuesday's radio interview, but then proceeded to insult him based on what...
  • Justified Homicide in California not Considered Justified by FBI

This shooting in California is a good example of why the FBI does not report the vast majority of justified homicides in this country.  The robbery was stopped and the robber killed, so no robbery will be reported by the police.  What would be the point?  From the San Gabriel Valley Tribune: “Wurtz came to collect some property that our victim was holding,” Coleman said. But after obtaining the agreed-upon property, “(He) wanted more,” the lieutenant said. Wurtz then tried to rob McCabe, officials said. “He Tasered our victim,” Coleman said. “The resident fired in self-defense.”  Without a robbery...

FBI agents acted reasonably when they shot and killed a man in the Idaho wilderness who was suspected of kidnapping a teen girl and killing her mother and brother in California, federal and state prosecutors said Wednesday. The two FBI agents who shot James DiMaggio acted reasonably and should not face charges, U.S. Attorney Wendy Olson and Valley County Prosecutor Jay Kiiha said in a joint announcement. DiMaggio, 40, was killed Aug. 10, a week after authorities said he abducted 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and killed her relatives in Boulevard, California. …

OMAHA, Neb. —Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said no charges will be filed against a homeowner who fatally shot a 19-year-old man investigators said broke into the residence Saturday night. Authorities on Monday said Ronald Green, 66, was watching TV when he was startled by the sound of his front door flying open. Ramon R. Matlock entered the home, and Green ran to a bedroom to retrieve a revolver, authorities said. Matlock swung at Green, and Green fired a shot into Matlock's chest and another into his lower back, authorities said. Authorities said Matlock ran out the door, but only...
  • Two Models of Modern Murder

    gunwatch.blogspot.com ^ | 18 October, 2013 | Dean Weingarten
There are two models of modern murder that are used in the debate about how to deal with crime.   The assumptions about reality that the models are based on are significantly different, which results in consistently different prescriptions for public policy. The first model, which I call the "Progressive Elite" model, has these basic assumptions about criminal homicide and its causes: 1.  The majority of people, except for the exceptional elite, are just moments away from committing a criminal homicide.  They have poor impulse control and fly into rages which escalate into homicidal rages if a weapon happens to be...
  • Justified Season 4 Finale Review: One Coin, Two Sides

Having previously wrapped up the mystery of Drew Thompson, the hunt for Ellen May, and the dangerous situation with Limehouse in an outstanding five-episode arc to conclude the major events of Season 4, there was little for Justified to do in its season finale other than get poetic and set up Season 5. While last week's episode, "Peace of Mind," was a thorough showcase for the series' secondary characters, the finale shifted focus to Justified's two leading men, Boyd Crowder and Raylan Givens, and how they're two sides of the same rusty old nickel. More so than previous seasons, Season 4 really played up Boyd...

As Iran ratcheted up its rhetoric Thursday about closing the Strait of Hormuz, Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul revisited his earlier criticisms of Western policy towards Tehran, adding that Iran would be justified in cutting off the strategic waterway in response to sanctions. ... At a campaign event in Iowa Thursday, Paul called Western sanctions imposed against Iran over its nuclear activities “horrendous” and “acts of war,” while repeating earlier assertions that Iran would understandably want to develop a nuclear weapons capability, the Los Angeles Times reported.
  • Don't give out cancer drugs if it's just to extend life: Treatment costs can't be justified,

Patients with terminal cancer should not be given life-extending drugs, doctors said yesterday. The treatments give false hope and are too costly for the public purse, they warned. The group of 37 cancer experts, including British specialist Karol Sikora, claimed a 'culture of excess' had led doctors to 'overtreat, overdiagnose and overpromise'. Campaigners dismissed the report, saying it was wrong to write off cancer victims. 'I would hardly call this type of treatment futile,' said Rose Woodward, of the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer.

Columnist Larry Derfner fired from Jerusalem Post after writing in his blog that "the Palestinians have the right to use terrorism." The Jerusalem Post has fired leftist columnist Larry Derfner after he published a commentary piece in which he justified Arab terrorism against Israelis and particularly the recent multiple terror attacks near Eilat. In a column dated August 21 which he published on his blog and which was entitled “The awful, necessary truth about Palestinian terror,” Derfner wrote: “[T]he Palestinians, like every nation living under hostile rule, have the right to fight back, that their terrorism, especially in the face...

INTRODUCTION: This is a short story called “Worth Fighting”. It relates to America’s Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If this piece works, it will not need further explanation. If it doesn’t work, I’ll try a different approach. The point being, America’s wars in the Middle East are justified and should therefore be popular among Americans and Middle Easterners. What appears to be lacking in America today is the appropriate context to defend any military conflict under any circumstances. While I can understand anti-War emotion, Americans should not be paralyzed by it. Pacifism belies a universal truth. Some causes are worth...

A Clackamas County grand jury Monday voted not to indict a sheriff's deputy and a Sandy police officer who fatally shot a 27-year-old Gresham man last month. Fouad Kaady died Sept. 8 of gunshot wounds on a rural highway north of Sandy after a bizarre chain of events. Fouad Kaady, who was suspected in at least three hit-and-run crashes in the hours before he died, was bloody, naked and combative, sheriff's officials said. He was unfazed by 50,000 volts from a stun gun and refused to respond to commands. Both officers testified that Kaady jumped from the ground to the...

Army personnel have admitted to beating or threatening to kill Iraqi detainees and stealing money from Iraqi civilians but have not been charged with criminal conduct, according to newly released Army documents. Only a handful of the 54 investigations of alleged detainee abuse and other illicit activities detailed in the documents led to recommended penalties as severe as a court-martial or discharge from military service. Most led to administrative fines or simply withered because investigators could not find victims or evidence. The documents, which date from mid-2003 to mid-2004 and were obtained by five nongovernmental organizations through a joint lawsuit,...

WASHINGTON, Jan. 24 - The American Civil Liberties Union released documents on Monday describing complaints of serious abuse of Iraqi civilians, including reports of electric shocks and forced sodomy, and accused the military of not thoroughly investigating the cases. The documents list dozens of allegations of abuse at American detention centers - the use of cigarettes to burn prisoners, aggressive dogs, electric shocks, sexual humiliation and beatings - that began at about the same time such acts were occurring at Abu Ghraib prison. But it is not always clear whether every case described is a new incident; many details, including...

Elsie Kost was charged yesterday with homicide in the death of her husband Edward. Police say Edward Kost was killed November 16th but authorities didn't find out about the shooting until Elsie Kost confessed to shooting him and putting his body in cistern on their property. Elsie Kost had told others her husband was away at a hunting camp. But New Sewickley police say she told her daughter about the shooting yesterday and they...
