    Daily Telegraph ^ | 16th October 2018 | ALLISON PEARSON
ITV’s new Sunday-night drama, Butterfly, is as moving as it is distressing. Eleven-year-old Max (Callum Booth-Ford) likes feather boas and pink crop-tops. Max thinks he wants to be a girl, but his builder father is appalled. He slaps the boy, screams in his face, insists to Vicky, Max’s well-meaning mother (Anna Friel), that “it’s about us fixing him”. The parents separate under the strain. At school, Max is bullied for being a “freak”. His granny is an off-the-peg bigot. The characters who question Max’s choice to become Maxine, and to go to school wearing a skirt, are pantomime villains. The...

ITV has set itself a challenge with its latest drama Butterfly. It tells the story of a transgender child and a family struggling to know how best to deal with the transition. It stars Anna Friel as Vicky, mother to 11-year-old Max (Callum Booth-Ford), who wants to become Maxine. Emmett J Scanlan, of Hollyoaks fame, plays father Stephen. Alison Steadman takes the role of Vicky's mum and Millie Gibson is Max's sister Lily. The family has been torn apart. Despite the couple's love, Stephen has left, unable to cope with Vicky allowing Max to be a girl at home. Meanwhile outside,...

    Irish Independent ^ | 11th October 2018 | Sarah MacDonald
A majority of Catholics want the Church to reconsider its teaching on LGBT issues, a new poll launched in Rome yesterday has revealed. A total of 9,606 people were surveyed across Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, United States, Philippines, France, Italy and Spain for the poll, representing half of the world's Catholic population. The survey was carried out by Yougov on behalf of Equal Future 2018, a coalition of LGBT, progressive Catholic religious, children and young peoples' groups. Campaign director Tiernan Brady, who led the marriage equality campaign in Ireland in 2015, launched the findings in Rome. He described the survey findings...

Four years ago, 14-year-old Lizzie Lowe took her own life because she did not believe she would be accepted as a Christian who was also gay. Since then her church, St James in Didsbury, Manchester, and its sister church Emmanuel, has formally become an inclusive church - embracing everyone, regardless of gender, race, disability or sexuality. Lizzie's parents believe embracing inclusion could help save the lives of other teenagers.

A male bank director who occasionally dresses as a woman has been slammed for ‘making a mockery of women’ by accepting a place on a list of the Top 100 Women in Business. Philip Bunce, who works at Credit Suisse, claims to be ‘gender fluid’ and ‘non-binary’ and will split his time ‘fifty-fifty’ between Pippa and Philip - occasionally dressing in a wig and dress. But his appearance on the Financial Times & Her-oes Champions of Women in Business list has been branded ‘insulting’ by those who think occasionally dressing as a woman is not enough to qualify.
  • India court legalises gay sex in landmark ruling

    BBC News ^ | 6th September 2018 | BBC News
In a historic decision, India's Supreme Court has ruled that gay sex is no longer a criminal offence. The ruling overturns a 2013 judgement that upheld a colonial-era law, known as section 377, under which gay sex is categorised as an "unnatural offence". The court has now ruled discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is a fundamental violation of rights. Campaigners outside the court cheered and some broke down in tears as the ruling was handed down. Although public opinion in India's biggest cities has been in favour of scrapping the law, there remains strong opposition among religious groups...

Though Adventure Time’s series finale brought Finn and Jake’s televised adventures to an end this week, the event also confirmed one of the most interesting and longstanding theories about the show that astonished and delighted many fans. After multiple seasons of hints, clues, and varying amounts of queer subtext, Adventure Time’s finale confirmed that Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the vampire have romantic feelings for one another and are destined to be together. During a climactic battle against GOLB, a powerful and malevolent being from another dimension hellbent on destroying Ooo, Marceline watches as Bubblegum is apparently crushed, prompting the vampire...

A nine-year-old boy has killed himself after enduring four days of homophobic bullying at school in Denver, Colorado, his mother says. Leia Pierce told KDVR-TV that her son, Jamel Myles, revealed to her over the summer that he was gay. She said Jamel wanted to go to school and tell his classmates because he was "proud" to be gay. Denver Public Schools (DPS) say crisis counsellors have been made available to students at Jamel's elementary school. The school system sent letters to families on Friday about the additional counselling services for students. The letter, addressed to Shoemaker families, says Jamel's...
  • World Meeting’s mixed messages bring value of all families into focus (anti-nuclear family)

THOSE who seek to put a tight or traditional definition on the meaning of family are out of touch and run the real danger of creating exclusion, division and inequality. This is something which the organisers of the World Meeting of Families have been learning. The fact individuals and groups do not feel welcome at the gathering is a matter of record and something which as a campaigner, activist and a public representative I regret. Next month, my department will publish research showing the notion of the “nuclear family” is outdated and for hundreds of thousands of people does not...

In a sweeping, one-hour meeting with The Salt Lake Tribune's editorial board on Monday, the Salt Lake County Republican Party's new communication director made claims about the LGBTQ community that the county health department described as "wildly inaccurate" and Equality Utah said are " deeply irresponsible. " Dave Robinson joined county GOP Chairman Scott Miller, who has been on the job for a little more than a month, for a conversation about where they see the party headed on issues ranging from water to land use and the LGBTQ community. Miller said he's looking to make his party "relevant again"...

I think we can all agree that we want the brightest future for our children, especially children in the foster care system. The essence of being pro-life is preserving life of the innocent by all means necessary. By giving these children a chance at a good life, we need to support and cherish them through their development. One continuing conversation that arises is whether or not same-sex couples are fit to foster and adopt children; these extra examinations are often based on misconceptions and biases towards same-sex couples. This slows down the process of adoption, adding extra hurdles to the...
  • Christian baker vindicated by SCOTUS back in court for not baking a gender transitioning cake

The Christian baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple and was vindicated by the Supreme Court earlier this year is mounting another legal challenge this week after refusing to bake a gender-transitioning cake. Shortly after the Supreme Court ruled in June that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission discriminated against baker Jack Phillips for his religious beliefs, an attorney requested he create a cake that was pink on the inside and blue on the outside to represent a gender transition from male to female. As a Christian, Mr. Phillips would not make the cake since it...

Even a man who thought that women want to have sex with their fathers, and that women spend much of their lives distraught over their lack of a penis, is right sometimes. This person, the legend that is Sigmund Freud, theorized that people often have the most hateful and negative attitudes towards things they secretly crave, but feel that they shouldn't have. If Freud is right, then perhaps men who are the most opposed to male homosexuality have particularly strong homosexual urges for other men. One study asked heterosexal men how comfortable and anxious they are around gay men. Based...
  • If We Don’t Ban Fortune Tellers, We Shouldn’t Ban ‘Gay Conversion Therapy’

    The Federalist ^ | August 7th 2018 | Chad Felix Greene
When the topic of “conversion” or “ex-gay” therapy comes up, it invokes images of sad, lonely, and desperate gay men and women praying to cease being who they are. It can conjure the image of a domineering religious figure shouting to the heavens of hell and demons over a terrified child. Others, especially in the LGBT media, revel in the anticipation of catching well-known ex-gays in sexually compromising positions. But for the most part, the practice seems like a relic from another time, and only a small number of the religiously devout ever encounter it. In 2014, only 8 percent...

Tens of thousands of Israeli protesters have rallied in Tel Aviv against a law denying surrogacy to gay couples and single fathers. Demonstrators held their gathering in the central Rabin Square, and at one point briefly blocked a major motorway. At least one person was arrested. Israel's parliament on Wednesday allowed surrogacy for single women and women unable to bear children. Previously, only heterosexual married couples were granted the same rights. The legislation also envisaged state funding for surrogacy. "We came here today (Sunday) to say to the government 'No more'," demonstrator Oz Dani in Rabin Square was quoted as...
  • Batwoman: Lesbian comic hero to get TV series

A TV adaptation of Batwoman is to become the first live-action superhero series with an openly gay lead character. The show is being developed for the US channel, the CW, adding to the network's collection of shows based on DC comics characters. Batwoman was introduced in the 1950s as a love interest for Batman to dispel rumours of his own homosexuality. The character was reintroduced in 2006 as a gay woman called Kate Kane. She has since become the highest-profile openly gay character of any DC comic. The show's synopsis describes Kate Kane as an "out lesbian and highly trained...
  • World Cup 2018: Smuggling the Pride flag into Russia

    BBC News ^ | 10th July 2018 | Shiona McCallum
Six LGBT activists have found a way to fly the Pride flag in Russia - by wearing football shirts in the rainbow colours. The country has had a law banning the spreading of "gay propaganda" among under-18s since 2013. The Pride flag is a symbol celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, but displaying it in Russia can get you arrested. The group got together and wore their nations' football tops around Moscow. It meant the shirts of Spain, the Netherlands (who weren't in the World Cup), Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia collectively made the colours of the stripes of...

Welcome to LGBTQ Wrath Month. Perhaps you are confused. “#LoveIsLove!” you tweeted. “Love wins!” you said. And you meant well. You always mean well — the beer brands that used to mock us, the banks that denied us loans. The bachelorette parties that use us as props, the straight boys who assure us they are “cool with it” but do not get why we have to be so “in your face.” So quick to fly our flag, and even quicker to take it down. But now that June’s Pride Month is over and we’ve entered the muggy July heat, we...
  • 'Gay conversion therapy' to be banned as part of LGBT equality plan in UK

Controversial "gay conversion therapies" are to be banned as part of a government plan to improve the lives of gay and transgender people. A national survey of 108,000 members of the LGBT community suggested 2% have undergone the practice with another 5% having been offered it. It also found more than two-thirds of LGBT people avoid holding hands in public, for fear of negative reactions. The prime minister said nobody "should ever have to hide who they are". A 75-point plan to improve the lives of LGBT people, costing £4.5m, has been produced in response to the survey. It includes...
